Sad day. These conflicts have had a heavy toll in terms of lives lost and history lost.

Any more setbacks and Iran might have to send in the Hezzies again.

They should have unleashed the cataphracts….

This makes me sad, as a Palmyra-phile…

I have been worried about Palmyra for months, and now my fears have been realized. If it is destroyed by these new Huns, it would be a crime against civilization.

WHERE is the French Foreign Legion when we truly need them? This mission is right up their alley.

And once again the UN reveals itself as a toothless lackey, unable to do anything except to rubber-stamp actions taken by great powers with clout. A sad day this is indeed.

Don't look, ghost of Zenobia.

Can't see anyone taking much action…………..

cherrypicker20 May 2015 10:10 p.m. PST

As an ex member of the British army, the UN is not worth my spit, the people running it sit back and talk, but never take action.

I say time to scrap the UN

That view gains more and more credibility with me I'm finding.

Glad ISIS is on the defensive. Hate to see what they could do of they were on a roll.

Hopefully these DaeshBag medieval trogs won't trash the ruins like they have in the past.

Or better yet, where is the UN or the other non-Daesh moslems ? Like Turkey … the second biggest force in NATO and the largest islamic member.

She will weep …

Turkey would LOVE to do something but we…uhhh…have something else that day. A dental appointment, maybe? Dunno. Anywhoo, good luck with that, neighbors!

They just washed their hair and can't do a thing with it !

Really, why should they? If the accusations of Turkey buying cut rate oil from ISIS are true, that could be your answer.

I try and put this threat to ancient artifacts in perspective. Personally, if someone torched the Bayeux Tapestry out of fanatic pique, I'd feel like killing them all. But that's pretty narrow. We should all be either incensed that "history" is being lost daily, or not care at all.

I'm leaning toward the second way anymore. It doesn't pay to get worked up over old things, they're all doomed anyway. If they serve a purpose, fine, try and preserve them for posterity. But the hell of it is that almost nobody cared for centuries/millennia, so why get worked up over it now? If something happens to survive the blight and caprice of Time, that's just dandy for us today. But it is all doomed. If humans in cretin form destroy so what? We can rebuild anything that has been recorded, and then the "history" of the thing includes the rebuild, just one more step removed from the original story. And that's all the significance anything old has, part of a story, somebody's version of it, not mine, not yours. If you have the replication of the artifact (there is still the Reading Tapestry if the original is ever lost – plus countless frieze books, and entire HD video/pictorial renditions) that's just as good as the real thing for telling the story.

Of course, we all weep when a favorite toy is lost/broken/stolen/destroyed. But strong feelings of animosity ought to be reserved for mans inhumanity to man, not the wanton, gleeful destruction of physical remains of dead civilizations….
