I've been experimenting with different glues, mediums and adhesives to make my own grass tufts, small bushes and flowers. I am also making large grass patches and clumps, as you can see. All of these were made using one of those fly zapper static grass applicators and various static grasses. Lots of fun making these. How about writing up a tutorial? |
nevinsrip | 20 May 2015 7:12 p.m. PST |
I did 3 tutorials for the web Ezines ACW Gamer and Early American Wars. Check them out. For 3 bucks you can't really go wrong. I'm not sure which issue has which tutorial in it, but they are all terrain tutorials on groundwork. |

They really do look excellent. Small question. Would it be an idea to use Brown coloured material to attach the flock too (if such material is available)or do the clumps come away/are removable from the material ? |
nevinsrip | 23 May 2015 11:33 a.m. PST |
The clumps easily pull away from the wax paper. All of the glues that are used dry clear so that you don't see them. I guess you could mix a brown paint into the glue if you wished, but I have not tried that. |

Did you use PVA or some sort of latex glue like carpet tactifier? Just curious if you've made them self adhesive |
nevinsrip | 24 May 2015 2:40 p.m. PST |
Aileen's Tackey & Fast Grab glues. No, they are not self adhesive. |

I've been playing around with making them, these are the best so far …
I'm very envious of your verity of grasses and foliage material. I'm guessing they were done with a battery powered applicator and not a flockbox? |
nevinsrip | 19 Jun 2015 1:57 a.m. PST |
TT They were done with one of those fly zapper conversions. That way you can make several passes using different colors and sizes to get the looks that I did. Shoot me a PM if you need any directions or help. |

When you are using different lengths of flock do you find it better to start with the longest or shortest first? |
nevinsrip | 19 Jun 2015 6:39 p.m. PST |
Start with the longest and make a couple of passes. It is important to make at least 2 passes. I sometimes make 3 or 4 passes depending on the effect I am trying for. Then switch to the shorter. Continue with the shorter until you can no longer see the glue. Again, multiple passes. Let it all dry overnight and then add the "flowers". |
TheOtherOneFromTableScape | 20 Jun 2015 4:47 a.m. PST |
How do you apply the glue for the flowers? Do you spray the tuft with diluted PVA adhesive, or dip the ends of the fibres into ordinary PVA? |
John Treadaway | 20 Jun 2015 8:31 a.m. PST |
@ nevinsrip Superb work. I have enough trouble panting stuff without having to make my own tufts! But then, it looks like you are set up to make a g'zillion of them: you either must paint a mountain of models or you are selling them. Either way, good luck: they're excellent, easily as good as anything I've seen and better than most. John T |
nevinsrip | 20 Jun 2015 11:22 a.m. PST |
How do you apply the glue for the flowers? Roll a toothpick in some super glue (liquid not gel) and then rake it across the very tips of the tufts. Use a light touch and don't glob it on. Less is more, here. Do about 10-12 tufts at a time. Sprinkle your flowers from above using thumb and forefinger. Let it set up and then tap the excess off. That's how I do it. |

But then, it looks like you are set up to make a g'zillion of them: you either must paint a mountain of models or you are selling them. No John, not selling them. But I did give bunches away to some lucky TMP'ers, including our esteemed Editor. I just really enjoy making them and seeing what combinations that I can come up with next. |

I like them lots, but where do you get all the varieties of static fibres and foliage materials from? I guess you have quite a selection to choose from |

Wow, you killed it, with the tufts and flowers. Xin/Jeff |

Scenic Express has a large range of static grasses and coloured flock I did 3 tutorials for the web Ezines ACW Gamer and Early American Wars. Check them out. For 3 bucks you can't really go wrong. I'm not sure which issue has which tutorial in it, but they are all terrain tutorials on groundwork. I found the articles really helpful – multiple passes has made a lot of difference John |
