Hi all, The first unit of British "Heavies" are done with the completion of the 4th Dragoons
The "Queen's Own" would play a major part in Wellington's Peninsular War and become a veteran British cavalry regiment. Its Colonel would go on to command the Household Cavalry Brigade at Waterloo. If you would like to know more, then just follow the link to JJ's link Jonathan |

Excellent! I notice one trooper is wearing a shako instead of the bicorne? |
carojon | 20 May 2015 3:33 a.m. PST |
Hi joaquin99 and thank you. The shako is a mirlton worn by the heavy cavalry in the peninsula as an alternative to the bicorne. It differs from that worn by the light cavalry in not having the scarf like attachment at the back and the addition of a peak and badge. |

Lovely stuff as always! The shako-like headgear is called a 'watering cap' and was an item normally worn on 'fatigue' duties, foraging, marching, etc. IIRC, it was normally folded flat when not worn. |

Thank you Jemima Quite right, the "watering cap". My description comes from C.E. Franklin's "British Napoleonic Uniforms" book. |

Carojon- beautiful looking figures. One minor point- the 4th Dragoons had a longstanding tradition that its trumpeters (previously side drummers) should be black men. There are numerous contemporary references (usually inspection reports) and illustrations of the 4th's trumpeters as black men, from at least 1715 to 1822. A number of these specify additionally that all of the musicians were black. AB figures do actually produce a Dragoon trumpeter in a turban-like head dress to represent the 4th- taken from contemp pictures. Hope that helps. |

Hi seneffe, thank you I didn't know that, thanks for the information. At some stage in the project I will amend my regiment. Thanks JJ |

JJ, you have made a lovely job of painting these, always one of my favourite uniforms. We do indeed have that black trumpeter, and if you get in touch I will send you one. [URL=http://s53.photobucket.com/user/TonyBarton/media/Dragoons-in-shakos_zpsexb9xeaj.jpg.html]
