Hi all, I'm looking for a ruleset for some 6mm ideas I've got. Basically small mech's (15mm sized) individually based, small stands of infantry (20mm round bases, 3 men) and vehicles. I'm actually toying with a much more 'science-fantasy' sci fi setting, so 'knight' style mechs, space elves and large space-dragons. So 'skirmish' size but not individually based infantry, Ideally with unit creation and base sizes not too key (that way I can aslo use some epic infantry I have based). Where am I best looking? I considered grunts (stands of infantry count as 1 man) but would love to hear some other options. |

I'd recommend Dirtside as well, but it's more geared towards hard sci-fi, so maybe NetEpic? |

Thanks, I'll look at dirt side in more detail – epic is geared towards too large armies for what I'm talking about I think, though on reflection picking just the right army lists to proxy might work. |

Dirtside is great but it's very grounded in "realistic" scifi. I'd look into Epic as well or roll your own. |

Fivecore Company Command with the Company Command in Space supplement, is what I am using with my Epic minis. Our own Weasle is the author. |

Strike Legion is another option, lots of design choices for organics too, for your space dragons, and VSF elements (i.e. more primitive troops). Works at a company plus per side. |

Try these for a 'skirmish' game…… angelbarracks.co.uk/rules.html These use individually based figures but mine are in three's too but these rules work ……..might have to do some 'legwork' on stats for vehicles but best of all they are free and designed to be tweeked! |

Yes, NetEpicA … look at the Exodite rules … Here's the link on Tac Cmd > link |

Armor Grid Mech Attack is a nice set of rules for mecha-vehicles-infantry squad games. |

The Mekton RPG if it is still available. It had combat that would work for a platoon or so. Heavy Gear covers most of what you want – except the space dragons. |

HELLFIRE by Jim Webster needs to be reprinted :) |

If you want to do FiveCore Company Command (with the scifi expansion), a typical force is 10-20 elements (stands of infantry or individual vehicles). Should play in about an hour and a half or so. |

Dirtside or even Stargrunt would probably work but as has been said it is more hard sifi. But I'd try Gruntz, base infantry together as you like and you can build all your beasties and vehicles with what you like using the construction rules :) Depending on table scale keep ranges in inches or change to cm :) Good luck on what you choose and please post up an AAR as it sounds like fun ;) Cheers Matt |

Thanks everyone – it does sound like I should keep toying with Gruntz and base the infantry together. I love EPic Armageddon as a ruleset, it's just too big I think, with it's detachment requirement. Weasel, by the way – Clash on the Fringe is fantastic, enjoying it a lot. |

Glad you're digging it! I am anxiously waiting for people to start getting some AAR's up and showing off some armies :) |

I've actually got Rogue Planet and use it for some other stuff I game (sprit-mechs hunting giant beasts) but I can't get it to fit here. |

I've actually got Rogue Planet and use it for some other stuff I game (sprit-mechs hunting giant beasts) That sounds fun! :) For this new game you're working on, you could use a mixture of group and light armor designations to represent your infantry. Light would probably be optimal for the setting so that you could generate more energy for the mechs, dragons, and other large killers. If you used groups, you could house rule it so that when they occupied a building or other important terrain piece that it generated a one time bonus energy for your force. This would make for even more interesting decisions on the battlefield, and it would give infantry an additional non-damage based tactical role that indirectly threatens the giants, dragons, and mechs. The medium and heavy designations could be used for your vehicles, tanks, dragons, and mechs. Send me an email through the contact page on my site. I have a few other things that you could try out. ;) |
