There are several in my local group that are interested in doing some Star Wars gaming. The debate is hot as to what we should do. And we cant afford to do everything -- we are at the arse end of the world, and the Star Wars stuff is expensive down here!!!

So what do people recommend out of the three hot titles? We are looking for something where 3 or 4 people can build individual forces to battle each other.

X-wing; lower per model cost than Armada, currently has better force building options than Assault.

I think it depends on whether you prefer tactical fighter combat, ship-to-ship engagements or small scale individual and unit skirmishes. That's the primary question you and your group should answer in such an either-or proposition; cost and options are secondary considerations, or if you have no particular preference.

I'd go with X-Wing. Great fun, for a reasonable price.

You can buy other ships, fighters, etc. for the other games, e.g. Micromachines or Titanium spaceships, and use Full Thrust rules.

Clix prepainted figs for gaming person to person combat, with lots of free rules, like FUBAR – there's a Star Wars version of that.

I prefer the more epic style gameplay of Armada and have a group working on converting some B5 and BSG and more over for use in Armada.

What 28mm Fanatik said. X-Wing has more time since its release and is cheaper than Armada, but the volume of releases and the list building will have you spending more in more, different ships. Also if you are a SW fan you will end up buying Armada too. Imperial Assault and Armada are starting, not much time since their release, so not everything is available; it means you can "grow" with the game, and you can keep pace with expansions. But don't fool yourselves, you'll end up with the three of them, specially if the debate for starting is hot, as it means people want different things/have different leanings. You'll need to manage your buying schedule. ;-)

P.S.: if you are a group, maybe the Armada or Assault can appeal to each player as characters leading their ship or playing their role, while X-Wing can be more of a competitive game…

X-Wing is a fun game (although the many expansions have left it less fun rather than more in my opinion), but I find that I'm being drawn to Armada. The problem with X-Wing is that you have to sort of mentally adjust to the fact that your game is just some tiny part of a bigger whole and the results don't 'matter' all that much. The Star Destroyer and Rebel cruisers are slugging it out somewhere else and for some reason you and your fighters are stuck in this meaningless furball here. With Armada, you have the whole picture, the big and the small, and everything comes together in coherent whole. Big ships and fighters and they all play their part.

X-wing is the best of the three IMHO. Imp Assault is pretty good. While Armada's minis are beautiful, the rules are not as clearly written, the big table-like bases are ugly and detract from the miniatures, and the movement contraption is a pain in the butt to use. Go with X-wing.

While Armada is easily my favorite of the three, I'd have to recommend going with xwing for your situation. Make sure to pick up "most wanted" to get the third faction!

Visually I'm not too excited about Imperial Assault. It uses a very small amount of miniatures so it is skirmishes only. I like a larger amount of figures to get the epic feel that Star Wars has.

I play X-Wing and it is a fun game, but I personally would start with Armada because I like the epic feel.

It all comes down to personal taste though

X-wing, hands down.

Assault is a decent game, but does not really FEEL like StarWars.

Armada suffers from awkward movement rules and silly bases, and will be very limited or very expensive.

Redcoat 5519 May 2015 9:41 a.m. PST

My favorite is Armada.

im looking at starting to play…

what do people think about teaching a 9yr old, starting out, Xwing easy enough to pick up?

no looking at hijacking this thread, as I also am interested in all three games, lol….

My 6 and 8 year olds play x-wing

Howler19 May 2015 7:51 p.m. PST

Add my vote for x-wing.

kabrank21 May 2015 6:31 a.m. PST

X Wing for starters [we have not found anyone who does not like this including Sci-Fi haters] and Armada second.

We play both and have had no problems with Armada movement/control.

Looked at Assault but whilst the starter box is a reasonable buy [cost per figure] some of the expansions are very expensive if one is looking for large numbers games.

Armada will choke your wallet to death.

I have a large fleet of X-wing minis sitting on the shelf due to the pure beauty of game design and tactical depth that is Armada. In comparison X-wing feels overly simple and one dimensional in gameplay with too little actual tactics and storytelling and too much focus on the meta gaming. As a wargamer: Go for Armada.

Imperial Assault: Very solid design. Having played a couple of missions i would love to play the campaign at some point. But i i really like starships.
