I'm going to be at the Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio on June 5th and 6th. I'm introducing my 16 year old son to the wonders of the gaming convention to try and pry him away from the video games and hopefully spark an interest in more traditional gaming.

If anyone wants to play a pick up game of BvB look for us in the open gaming room. The big dual scale hex map should be hard to miss. That, and my son will probably be wearing a suit of chain mail.

I'm sorry, but what is BvB?

Daricles,

What open gaming room? Been attending ORIGINS since it moved to Columbus…the only 'open' spaces were the 6 or so tables, upstairs all the way down the far end. Which are round and always taken.

If you're planning on using one of the many empty tables in one of the gaming halls, a word of advice….ask if it's OK first.

My friend Glenn and I picked an empty table a few years ago. Set up a game and began to play. One of the volunteers then approached us and told us we had to move, that table was reserved for an event. I pointed out that there were about 100 empty tables around us, couldn't one of those be used?

Nope, had to be ours.

At that point the person running the event and the 3 people who had signed up for it (also a board game) came up and said they would just use the table next to us. That space was reserved for him too.

Don't know what that game was…but they were done in like 30 minutes…..

BvB is short for Battlestars vs Basestars, which is a hybrid tabletop miniatures/board game of my own creation. You can read about it here:

Doug, I was referring to the area where you can check out board games from the "library" and play them. It used to be near the exhibit hall. I haven't been to Origins in a couple of years, but my friends and I used to set up and play our games there often. We also used to grab an open table out on the concourse and play games there as well or down near the cantina. If you are going to be there, keep an eye out for us and stop by to say hello.

Sorry, Dave. I didn't mean to call you Doug.

Doug doesn't mind… ;->=

It's awesomeness like this that makes me dream that some day I'll be going back to a 'major'. Heck, a trip to Denver would be nice…

Yeah, always check first. You can make people think a game is cancelled or you can mess up someone else's setup time and make their game run short if they get a late start. It's definitely not OK just to assume you can have a table if you aren't in an area specifically marked for open gaming. If there isn't that option, check the guidebook – you should be able to find if a game is running at that table in the time you will be there easy enough.
