Who makes good 15mm Dwarves and Orcs / Goblins. My buddy and I want to battle each others army. We will start with the miniatures and then choose some rules later. Any pictures or comparisons would be greatly appreciated. This is a new area of gaming for us. Thanks J.

Hi Jonnathon,

Check out the 18mm range I made for Eureka; I was quite pleased with them.

The ones mentioned above are nice ESPECIALLY Splintered Light. I also like the ones from Alternative Armies. Their Dwarves really look the part IMHO.

Thanks,

John

A lot depends on taste, do you like them cartoony or serious. For Orc's I like to mix them up, but my favourite are the old Grenadier one's now available through Mirliton.

Some of mine, a mixture of Mirliton, Eureka, Rank & File(?) and Khurusan.

Demonworld has a massive selection of many different races, and are some of the finest and cleanest sculpts you will find on the market. They are available through FASA Here: link

They are also very well priced. I also second Mirliton, though shipping from Italy is rough if you cant find a distributor here in the states!

All of the above are great suggestions. Just a couple of pointers;

Splintered Light effectively do 2 ranges – true 15mm and Bob Olley sculpted 20mm. Both ranges are excellent but don't mix well together.

15mm.co.uk Dwarves, in my opinion, don't mix so well with other ranges – they are taller and 'slighter'. Good minis though.

I've a few various painted examples of some of the mentioned ranges here: warchest.co.uk

Twilight Samurai – really like the human flesh colour on your chaps. Refreshing change to green and brown, but still clearly orcish.

My, those bugbears are FINE.

doc mcb19 May 2015 5:11 a.m. PST

On sizes, we (the McBrides) do use both the 15mm Splintered Light minis AND the 20mm Bob Olley minis in our armies, just not in the same units. Because, how large IS a goblin, or an orc? The 15mm goblins are, well, common goblins, while the 20mm goblins are wild orcs or hobgoblins or something, a larger breed. Plus leaders and heroes and such can be larger than life, i.e. a scale up from their rank and file.

Otoh, the SLM dwarves do come in two scales that really DON'T mix unless someone has a very different idea of what "dwarf" means! The 20mm Bob Olley dwarves are lovely but would tower over 15mm; like "giant dwarves" or "jumbo shrimp." The 15mm dwarves are truly dwarves in 15mm scale and so stand about 12mm.

I would certainly recommend the Splintered Light dwarves link as well as orcs and goblins link --we also have just added hobgoblins, kobolds, and bugbears in our 15mm dungeon crawl range link along with a variety of giant types to go with them link .

SLM figure work well with the old Ral Partha and Grenadier 15s as well as the Eureka 18mm orcs.

I like the look of our figures alongside the Demonworld dwarves and orcs, though I do not necessarily mix them in the same units.

Also, I am running a 20% off sale at the moment if you are interested in trying out the SLM stuff. Just enter SLMSPRING15 at checkout.

Thanks doc mcb. The miniatures are some of my favourite fantasy. I also agree on the scaling thing – mixing orcs + goblins at different scales I can also get my head around. However when dealing with more 'humanoid' types such as, er humans, and dwarfs in this case, they don't do so well.

That is of course unless you create a new 'race' for your 'World' which happens to be 'human height humanoids with serious water-retention issues'.

That, or use them with 25/28mm fantasy as really petite dwarves!

As doc mcb says, you can easily mix different ranges of orcs and goblins. If one range is bigger, they can be great orcs or hobgoblins.

With dwarves, many ranges of 15mm dwarves are actually bigger than 15mm humans, and don't look like dwarves at all IMHO. For my Dwarf army (which I'm building for aBattle of Five Armies project) I've gone with Peter Pig for most of the troops, with a few Splintered Light (mainly as the heroes). These scale well together and with 15mm humans.

I'm tracking my BOFA project on this thread on my forum:

I've just based the Dwarves and I'll be dipping them tomorrow. Hopefully I'll post some photos in a couple of days, along with some 15mm humans for comparison.

Hmmm, I remember seeing some orcs that resemble GW Orcs… Any idea who made those?

Jimboba21 May 2015 3:42 a.m. PST

Capt Flash – most likely the Demonworld ones. Cartoony and heroic style. (That's not a criticism).

Capt Flash21 May 2015 8:52 p.m. PST

@Jimboba- Thanks! Exactly the ones.

Here are some of my Peter Pig Dwarves lined up next to some vikings.

Spudeus02 Jun 2015 7:25 a.m. PST

Dwarves I've long struggled with as every sculpt seems to have its own ideas on how big they are. My favorite aesthetically to date are Copplestone's 'barbaric' ones.

Goblins I've tried every manufacturer I could get my hands on to give them a raggedy look. This includes SLM, Demonworld, 15mm uk, and Minibits, but in the end I went with Pendraken 10mm orcs for most of my rankers. They come in a wide variety of types and scale well in 15mm.

Copplestone casting dwarves are amazing:

Please, please, please Mr. Copplestone, give us more! Heavy armored, hammers, scouts/archers, berzerkers, etc.

Orcs is orcs, aint they?

Nice link but :
1. Demonworld Orcs are not OOP anymore
2. Splintered Light Orcs are missing
