Wasn't there an old one with Johnny Weismuller and Cheetah taking on the Nazis in the jungles of Africa ? |

I like the one with Jane taking a morning dip in the river! Tarzan and his Mate, maybe? That, and the one where he takes out nazis by dropping rocks on their heads. |

My fav was one from the 6os with Gordon Moore as the T man and Sean Connery as one of the henchman. Tarzan has sex with a woman and, after killing the villain, gives the Tarzan Cry in triumph. |

Shagnasty! That was Gordon SCOTT in the loincloth with Sean Connery, et al, in "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure," easily one of the best in the whole franchise. Outstanding script, fine performances by Anthony Quayle, Niall McGinnis, Scilla Gabel (Sophia Loren's body double!), as well as Sean and others make this almost incomparable. TVAG |

"Tarzan and his Mate" without a doubt! Those that don't think that it was great probably haven't seen it. It was pre-"Hays Office", so we got to see Jane swimming nude underwater! Yes…I said nude…and *completely* nude! It wasn't Maureen O'Sullivan, but rather a body double. The double was a friend and Olympic team mate of Weismuller's. One of the reasons she was chosen, beside the fact that she was an excellent swimmer, is that she could hold her breath underwater for such a long time. The end of the flick was just delirious, involving a huge battle with elephants and apes joined together to fight bad natives and lions! The scene with Jane standing on the rocks in her jungle bikini picking off lions with a hunting rifle is still vivid in my mind! And what a bikini! She never wore it again after that film. It was just too scanty for the censors. She was originally supposed to go topless, but it was too difficult to keep her strategically covered by ferns and other things, so they ditched the idea. |

The one where Tarzan dives off the Brooklyn Bridge, same one where he puts on a shirt for the first time and the back just rips. As a kid I spent ages trying to that. Much to my mums annoyance and amusement. |

>>As much as I like some of the old one, I don't think the best one has been made yet.<< You're right! I'd love to see a film done exactly like the ERB novel. And no, "Greystoke" was not. |

George of the Jungle. I don't think any of the movies are enjoyable in the light of the novels. (And I am the guy who is always saying you can't directly compare visual media and print media because of the differences.) |

I just bought copies of the 8 Johnny Weismuller Tarzan movies from the 1930's and 40's. Both "Tarzan the Ape Man" 1932 and "Tarzan and His Mate" 1934 were fantastic! |
The Shadow | 27 Jun 2015 9:18 a.m. PST |
Warren I think that you're going to find "Tarzan and his Mate" to be the best of the lot by far. The final battle is just incredible! |

1949-1952 Lex Barker made a Tarzan movie a year, then made another in 1953 for a total of 5 films. Barker has always been my favorite Tarzan. |

Crap Sorry, I didn't realize I was necro-posting. Move along. Nothing to see here. |
The Shadow | 01 Sep 2015 5:12 p.m. PST |
What's "necro-posting"? I thought that barker was a very good Tarzan. Unfortunately, that series of films had dropped drastically in production values by the time that he took over the role. |
Jim Rat | 02 Sep 2015 9:58 p.m. PST |
Necro-posting is posting to a thread that has been dead for a few months, thus bringing it back to life. I suppose those films may have been of lower production values, but as I was just a young-in' I didn't notice. |
The Shadow | 04 Sep 2015 8:03 a.m. PST |
There's nothing wrong with bringing up the Tarzan film discussion again. After all, this is the Pulp Media message board, and Tarzan is the most well known pulp era hero of them all. Everyone interested in pulp era fiction should read at least one Tarzan novel and see "Tarzan and his Mate". |
Hafen von Schlockenberg | 25 Dec 2015 5:49 p.m. PST |
Well, then, here's another "necro post" to second,or third,"Tarzan and His Mate". It was obvious even to my pubescent self that it was a body double in the underwater scene:flat chest, powerful thighs:a swimmer. Especially so after that tent scene with the clear sillouetting of Maureen O'Sullivan's naked form against the lantern light,an image burned into my 12 year old brain. Of course this was in the early sixties, today it's tame stuff. At the time, though… And this was on The Early Show, local 4:30 daily movie. Surprising, come to think of it,what they were showing at the time, although this was pretty much as far as it got The only thing to, um,"beat it",was Harlow in Red Dust"--Yeow!
But of course there was Mrs Peel… |
