I usually use craft paints, and have a bunch of Vallejo colors too.
And I will be using The Dip.

I would go with a medium tan, drybrush linen white and then give it the dip.

Americana Driftwood with ivory highlight. Never tried the dip.

I would do the highlight after the dip, but as a base i like driftwood from Americana as well.

To mix it up a bit, just use colors close to what the prior posts have mentioned as the base.

Mine is a very light grey with darkening tips to the point. It was a bull's horn in it's previous life. And a Mahogany base that I'm not sure that would pass muster.

lots of examples out on the net: seems you can use any color brown white black or mix you want

I always liked what I think is the "classic" look as in the first pic above posted by Ron W.

While these look great, on a 28mm figure, the darker color does not stand out very well. But I think it should turn out to be a close match after the dip method. That was why i suggested a lighter base color.

I think the second photo is really nice. I like the black horn tip. The one I own is more like the last picture.

John, mine is an original from 1822. It's very much like
the color of the last horn in Ron's sequence of pix.

If you are using the Dip paint it lighter than you might otherwise think. Any cream, linen, off-white should be fine. Darker tips are common.

I was shocked to see the OFM asking about powder horns. Has your account been hacked John?

Winston Smith17 May 2015 7:47 p.m. PST

What makes you think that? AWI and FIW are my primary focus.

I think he's presumed you've painted several hundred powder horns by now …

The OFM specializes in powdered whigs.

I'm painting a unit now with a lot of powder horns. I have never been satisfied by the ones I did in the past. It's never too late to do it right , hainna?

Do you have any pictures of your previous work?

Winston Smith19 May 2015 9:53 a.m. PST

So….
I tried Americana Faun.
Then I painted the ends with Liquitex Burnt Umber, with careful washes of same around the fat end.
It looks a lot better than previous just plain Ceramcote Ivory.

These are on the Scottish Hillbillies I made from the Over the Mountain Men from King's Mountain.
I might post pictures after this weekend's game.
