Watching Wolf Hall with my wife, she asked if I have such a book. I don't. I'm thinking of something that covers from Martin Luther up through the say 1550 or so, in English and hopefully readable, in print and reasonably priced. Tall order, eh? |

I can't really recommend anything I've read, but you could try these – link link |

All my college reading focused on the English Reformation and it was pretty heavy going. For France, I stuck to the political and military aspects of the Wars of Religion. You might try PM'ing Professor Wood for suggestions. It's definitely in his bailiwick. TMP link Also, if you haven't read Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies I highly, highly recommend them. I'm damned difficult to please when it comes to historical fiction (and the poor Tudors have suffered the most at the hands of awful writers) but these books absolutely floored me. |

Tough nut… For starters, try: The Age of the Reformation by Preserved Smith gutenberg.org/ebooks/18879 link To be read under the perspective that it was written in 1920. The main religious conflict in the pre 1550-era certainly was the Schmalcaldic war, which ensured the prominence (though not dominance) of the catholic Emperor in the Empire. |

Thank you gents. I think I'll start with this "The Reformation, a Very Short Introduction" link I don't know the author but Micheal Howard's Very Short Introduction to the First World War was quite good, though I wished it were longer. Perhaps Wolf Hall for beach reading this summer… |
