Hi all, I'm looking to expand my Austrian army by adding a grenadier battalion to my German division. Historically Austrian grenadier battalions were formed by combining the grenadier companies from 3 infantry regiments in the field. With this in mind, how do you approach the facings for your grenadiers? Do you use all 3 colours in your units or stick to one for simplicity's sake? Do you mix those different facings up, or keep men from one regiment on one base, other regiment on another, etc? Is your grenadier command all from the same regiment or a mix of the three? Thanks! |

You can find from OOBs the historical formations i.e. which regts brigaded so to speak those companies into battalions. My resources are books but dig around and I would assume that much of the same information can be located on the Internet. I will see what I can drum up later today. |

Which is to say that all grenadier bns that I have investigated have three different colors. In some circumstances just minor variations of red. But I paint the variation because it looks good and is historically accurate. |

In my SYW 15mm army I have several combined grenadier battalions (it's based on Allies at Warburg, so Hanoverian and British have several). I use 4 figures to a base and paint the figures on each base with the facings of one of the contributing regiments.takes a bit more time, but I like the look and it makes it clear that they are combined units. I am adopting a similar approach with my 10mm Dutch army of League of Augsburg, which contains a combined grenadier regiment. |

My grenadier battalions are six stands of six figures each. This makes it simple to have two bases for each regimental colour. Just make sure that the standard bearer is from the senior regiment represented as he will be carrying an ordnarefahne from that regiment. |

I use brigade units but still have two 12 fig " battalions" in them in case of using them otherwise, modeled for roughly ( as 4x3 instead of 6x3). Two historical units of 1809. Did not check but if you play 1805 or 1813 chances are they 'be organized otherwise so at least it is relatively right once! If I did ( and I did 25 years ago, in 1/300) the whole shebam batn scale I'd try to do them right at least for 1809. Then if labeling the command stand, there could be a possibility with remix of the stands to have it right for 1813 too. |

Mine are for Age of Eagles (1:100) so I paint 2 figures with the same facing and the other two with a different one. I try to keep them to the 1809 OOB |

I do mine with all stands in he same facing color. Makes it much easier to tell one Grenadier unit from another on the tabletop. To each their own. Do whatever looks/seems best to you! |

I use all three facing colours. And because i have four stand units, i have the command base with all colours. |
