Do you prefer the DC comics setting, the Marvel comics setting, another comic setting such as the Watchmen, Dark Horse or another publisher (and if so specify), or do you prefer a setting made simply for gaming such as the Champions setting by Hero Games, the Supers setting of Four-Color Figures, the IST setting of GURPS supers, or something else entirely? |

Golden Age to WW2 before things got too soap opera-ish and political in comics. |

I think I prefer Marvel of the late 70s and early to late 80s with the exception below. For one thing vigilantes sort of made sense. It seemed like there were a lot of good creators at work. This were not so over the top in a lot of ways and not everything had to tie into everything else, with there still being room for the occasional cross over. If I were to run a Super hero RPG that is when it would be set. Now you did say comicbook setting in the title but then your question more implied superhero, which is what I answered. If we were to go with comic book setting over all I'd go with 300 as my favourite setting. |

I started to collect the early "Conan the Barbarian" in 1970 (I believe). I collected up to about issue 20 something and then gave them to my little brother. I really liked the art work of the early issues and then the artist John Buscema (spell?) took over and I thought it lost the "Hyborean" flavor. |

Marvel late 70's early 80's always held a magical feel for me. I may be biased as they were the first comics I ever owned at a time where magic was very present in my life ;) Another great setting was the Judge Dredd 2000AD during the 80's and 90's for very different reasons than Marvel. Dark, gritty, tough, troubling and uncompromising but yet somehow irresistibly relevant to the teenager I was when reading it. |

Also enjoy "The Punisher" from Marvel and "The Sandman" series. David was right, these were some great WWII comics in the 1950's and 60's. Finally bring back "Dan Dare" and the "The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire". |

Here are a few of my all time favorite comics (and settings): Warlock 5 from Aircel comics by the late great talented Denis Beauvais. Gone with the blastwave by Kimmo Lemetti. Marvel's: Alien Legion. Aircel comics: The Adventurers. Lone Wolf and Cub. |

2000AD :) For a game though, something more generic with a fair range of power levels. |

Iron Wolf, in the early 70's. Weird science fiction/space opera before Star Wars came out. Last noted to three issues of Weird Worlds (DC) before it was stopped. |

Jack Kirby's cavaliering across Marvel and DC – effectively carrying on story lines from one to the other. Don't believe me? I invite you to compare and contrast Eternals, New Gods, Kamandi, 2001, and Thor. |

My favorite is Gotham City. Sometimes I just call it Gotham, as it's an "alternate universe" version of New York City anyway. I have also been known to use Newport City from Ghost in the Shell as a setting. I much prefer made-up settings to real ones; I like to have a free hand to tailor history and geography to suit my storytelling needs. Ron |
