All, I'm thinking about doing a small scale WWII skirmish game, basically following a US squad (ala "Combat"). I want to use the gorgeous AB 20mm figures for the US troops, but thought I could go cheaper for the Germans. Do any of the current 20mm plastics scale up well with AB? Nick |

If you're not going to mix them in with the US I'd guess anything close will be fine. It's only when figures are cheek by jowl that you can tell, anyway. Why not just use AB Germans? |

I'm with crispy on this. As you are going small the savings will be similar. you say a skirmish, so lets assume a full platoon…in the UK a full platoon of ab Germans will come in at about £50.00 GBP.3 x rifle packs, 1 officer pack, plus maybe a hmg pack about 44 figures. most other metal manufacturers are going to come in at about 80p a figure – or about £35.00 GBP…so you might save £15.00 GBP…. Even if you go plastic it will still probably cost you £10.00 GBP Its not a huge amount is it? and every time you play with them you won't be thinking "I wish I'd bought the ab Germans" I've just finished painting a big chunk of ab british, they were worth every penny. |

If you are not too worried about using too many vehicles have you considered Valiant Miniatures in plastic ? |

I heard that the Valiant plastics are closer to 25mm in height. |

I have actually considered the Valiant minis. I play mostly solo, so I'm not too worried about vehicles being not quite in scale. |

They are way too big for 20mm and way too small for 28mm, but fine as long as you are n't going to use other figures or vehicles – otherwise you'll have soldiers as tall at a Sherman tank. |

Ceasar fallschirmjager match up very well with the AB I know so I'm betting the other German packs match up too. You still need to use AB for heavy weapons probably. I found the Ceasar machine gunners to be too bendy, and will want AB command and maybe mortars too. After all that though your not saving a bunch… |

My advice would be to use AB Germans as well. Over the years I amassed a large collection of plastic 20mm WW2 I now wish I had purchased metal which may have meant less figures but all that precious painting time would have been better spent. |

I would buy what you really want. The largest 'cost' is the time you'll invest in painting them and personally I wouldn't spend my time painting plastic figures when I could be painting ABs. |

I'm with Timmo on this, AB figures are in a league of their own. |
