I was wondering if there are any other lines of figures that are compatible with the GW LOTR figures. I like most of these figures, but I don't like the idea of the typical soldier of Gondor being fully plate armoured (especially the archers). So I'm happy having a few of these as elite men-at-arms, and I have a few of the Numenorean archers, but I'd like some more humans to use as rank and file troops. Also if I want to do the Battle of Five armies in this scale I'd want some for the men of Dale / Laketown.
Any suggestions for compatible figures ? What about HaT 28mm plastics ?

This has been asked many times before, so search through past Fantasy threads or Google to find some.

In a nutshell, the LOTR plastics are smaller than about anything in 28mm out there, being almost true 25mm, whereas the LOTR metals can often be equivalent to Perry/Old Glory 28mm in scale. The plastic cavalry is especially problematic, because the riders are practically 25mm while the horses are also slightly smaller (though not terribly so) and as a result the combined mounted figure looks too small against even other 28mm plastics.

A good replacement for Gondor would be Old Glory Byzantines. Pick an era. Any era. They all should work. I'd stick with the OG Dark Age range for all of your Human figures.

I use the HAT miniatures El Cid Line, but add LOTR weapons and shields to some.

LoTR scale varies. It started out small and slowly got smaller. Most ranges of 28mm (to the eye) historical figures will do pretty well with GW LoTR figs.

A google images search will reveal a number of options. Lots of folks have done LoTR vs historical comparison pics.

Good Luck!

How would they look with Mithril? I've never seen the GW LoTR in the flesh, but the sculpting sensibilities look similar.

The GW LOTR figures I'm hoping to match with my Mithril ones haven't come in the mail yet, so I can't do a side-by-side comparison, but here are some Mithril figures with a ruler, in case that helps:

If the scale works, then you could look into Mithril's M-Series "Armies of Gondor" range, which are in chainmail:
Also, Red Box Games' stuff looks pretty compatible: azazelx.wordpress.com/2011/08/20/red-box-games-size-comparisons-with-gw-lord-of-the-rings-figures

Red Box should work because those are far closer to true 25mm than 28mm.

Alot of folks use Red Box figs, many of which appear to be deliberately scaled and styled for use with LoTR minis.
