My dad, a WWII US Army Signal Corps veteran who served in the Pacific, passed away in December 2013. One of his most memorable war stories was about how he spent VE Day on the other front. The many celebratons of the recent 70th Anniversary of "Victory in Europe Day" reminded of this story and I posted it on my blog, which is usually devoted to 19th Century Colonial warfare in general and the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878-1880 in particular, with a lof of posts on terrain-making. I debated with myself for a while over where the most appropriate spot to post this would be. Though my dad's story isn't a novel or history book or a movie or a TV show, I think this is the best place to put it, I suppose as a piece of "Oral History". If you're interested in hearing more, please click on the link below -- and thanks in advance for your time… link …and my humble thanks also to all the veterans, living and dead, who contributed to the Allied victory in Europe. |

link You forgot the "l" at the end of the URL. Good story and of course glad your dad survived intact. Jim |

Hey MG, interesting story! My dad was a BAR gunner in the 106/27th ID. His battalion was offshore in transports at Makin and Eniwetok, but landed on Saipan and Okinawa. On VE Day, the division was on Espiritu Santos before heading to Okinawa. He mentioned there were a lot of ships horns blowing and some gunnery on that day. But frankly, it didn't matter much to him and his buddies, since their war was in full swing, plus they had to look forward to invading Japan (if they survived Oki). He passed away in 2008. |

Whoa -- my bad. I've never made a mistake like that before and my sincere thanks for fixing it so fast, Col. Campbell!!! mjkerner: my sincere condolences for the loss of your dad back in 2008. Yeah, I doubt my dad would've had such a vivid memory of VE Day in the Pacific were it not for the particular details of his experience! And thank goodness for you and me both that the invasion of Japan didn't have to take place. |
