Pondering doing some Korean War stuff in 6 or 10mm.

Pretty content just appropriating some ww2 figures but the big question:

For the communist forces, how many would wear helmets?

Intrepide12 May 2015 9:51 a.m. PST

I have seen a very few images of late WWII Soviet helmets on some NKPA troops, I think serving some kind of anti-aircraft battery. This is as opposed to more photos than I can remember of of NKPA and CPVA troops in cloth hats.

Weasel12 May 2015 12:04 p.m. PST

That's what I was thinking. Most of the photo's seem to be hats of some type.
Can probably get away with mixing in the odd figure in helmet, just for visual appeal.

For a small scale, I am thinking I can just use soviets in winter gear.
Obviously ww2 figures will do fine for the UN forces.

For that scale there are these guys:

I always thought the period would be a fun one for an alternative history too. Pattons, Centurions and IS 2s and 3s mixing it up.

Korea does not get the attention it deserves.

All the images I found show Chinese & North Korean troops wearing ushankas, either fur in winter or thin cloth ones in the summer.
I've posted pictures below:

Some NK units wore helmets for the initial attacks, but they disappeared along the march. The PLA did not wear helmets. They viewed them as rather effeminate and counter to their emphasis on stealth.

Intrepide – Nice, thanks. Gotta have the bugle.

Appreciate the info Cold :)

For NK troops I took WWII US Minifigs and chopped the helmets to hats.

How well does Pithead and Pendraken look together?

Buckeye AKA Darryl12 May 2015 5:51 p.m. PST

Pithead already make Chinese (in winter gear) and North Koreans (in summer uniform) in 10mm, sans any helmets. The Chinese can be found under the North Korea listing, and the North Koreans are on the downloadable price listing.

Weasel, get a hold of SLA Marshall's "The River and the Gauntlet" about the Chongchon River battle in 1950. Glad my father-in-law served in the 2nd Division after that was over.

Some creep "borrowed" my copy years ago and never returned it.

Appreciate the suggestions

No helmets for the Chinese; I asked my partner's father about this a while ago and he confirmed it. His father (my partner's grandfather) fought in the Chinese army in Korea.

Weasel17 May 2015 10:25 a.m. PST

Well, thats as definitive as it gets. Thanks for sharing!

mashrewba18 May 2015 9:09 a.m. PST

Ah yes but did he see them all? evil grin

Of course if you field figs in helmets they'll just look like Russians and where's the fun in that?
