1813 PBEM. You send in map moves, the umpire and his wife game the battles with simple rules. link
Might be too simple for you, might not.

I've always enjoyed this group of PBEM games;
lords-of-conquest.com
I've played them all except the Si-Fi.

Medieval seems the most popular. 23 players from around the world. Great fun!

Yes it pays to be selective and shop around before committing to a PBEM game. I once spent quite a while on a campaign before realising the organiser had no clue about force ratios in the era concerned and the force multiplier represented by defending a built up area. A lot of wasted hours!

I did that with a version of Aerodrome a few years back.

The medieval warlords (or medieval diplomacy as it used to be) is also a very good game; had some crackers with that. It does rely a lot on the diplomacy aspect though so you need to be willing to spend time "chatting" over email.
