I only watched TOS and occasionally the one with that bald pacifist French guy, what's his name. Did anyone ever use their phasers on a higher setting, and what was it called? |
Dynaman8789 | 12 May 2015 4:58 a.m. PST |
Kirk said set to kill once. Disintegrate was another. |

Don't forget the "intentional overload" setting which basically turned it into a hand grenade! |

They used other settings all the time. I do not think you actually watched TOS at all if you don't know that. |

It was a long time ago in a galaxy far away. |

… (from Mad Magazine many decades ago) … Set phasers to stun. But Captain, my sensors indicate nothing but pretty women. Set phasers to "caress" … |

Actually over the course of TNG and later we see like a billion phaser settings; Single Stun, Area Stun, Kill (burns hole in target), Really Kill (disintegrates target), Hand Grenade/Time Bomb, Melt Stone, Smelt Metal, Disrupt Energy Fields, Irritate Changelings, the list goes on and on….. -Will |

Geez. How often did you need to recharge the battery? Or was it powered by handwavium? |
Dynaman8789 | 12 May 2015 8:17 a.m. PST |
They need a recharge as often as a hollywood six shooter needed bullets… |

It was also used in original Trek as a cutting device to slice through bulkheads on (as I recall) two occasions and a substitute power/fuel supply (Galileo 7). Oh, and the yeoman (played by the now late Grace Lee Whitney) did indeed eat up the captains beverage on one occasion during a power cut, along with the previously alluded to heating up of rocks to keep George Takei's feet warm. Yea, John, wrt that last…never could figure out why they couldn't send the shuttlecraft down to get the cold Sulu et al. |
Dynaman8789 | 12 May 2015 9:45 a.m. PST |
> never could figure out why they couldn't send the shuttlecraft down to get the cold Sulu et al. Shuttle had not been added to the show yet (that really is the answer) |

Dynaman's right Dave: at that point they hadn't sprung for the shuttlecraft and heating up a rock (read adding a glowing effect) was cheaper. I expect (reaaaaly) that the planet had some nasty effect that nullified the shuttles warp… er impulse… er somethings. :) John T |

I always enjoyed the overload setting, though destroying your only weapon for a single attack doesn't seem like the wisest move, unless you are a hero who can't be beaten. |

Sstryderg: A Taysider is just someone who hales from the area around the TAY river. Probably a resident of the Dundee/Perth areas (in Scotch-land :D ) Rather like Scousers are "merseysiders" (the river Mersey runs through Liverpool, UK). |

"Dynaman's right Dave: at that point they hadn't sprung for the shuttlecraft and heating up a rock (read adding a glowing effect) was cheaper." I still never understood why they couldn't beam down some blankets or tents or something – so what if they get duplicated, that's even better! Lol |

Why don't we talk about the real problem with phasers. No iron sights of any kind to properly aim them with. |
