I'm building up a Carthaginian army at the moment, but am hoping I can reuse some of the pieces in a Pontic or Successor army down the road. Would scutarii in mail be passable as thorakitai and scutarii in a regular shirt as thureophoroi? I've looked at as many pictures as I can find of the respective units, and the shields look really similar to my (admittedly untrained) eye. And what about using these spearmen as a pike phalanx. The spears are longer than any other spear armed figures I have, so I'm thinking they might be passable as Pikes for the Pontic army. link |

The main differences between the spearmen and pike armed infatry are a smaller shield with a different grip and position on the arm for pike armed infantry and a few feet longer weapon. |

If those scutarii are accurately depicted they should look distinctively Spanish, and be painted as such. Their substitutability as other troop types then really depends on your imaginative flexibility/visual acuity. |

I haven't seen any recent views on the Galatians but perhaps your Gauls could double as them. |

The victrix citizen infantry look like they could be used as thureophoroi with minimal work. They don't have cloaks (Most 28mm thureophoroi are modelled with cloaks) but apart from that would work well. |

@Henry, what defines a figure as distinctively Spanish? The descriptions I've read are white tunics with purple accents, a scutum and a sword/spear. @Max, oh yeah, I'm already planning on that. The sheer morphability of a massive barbarian army is one of the nice things about starting off the period with one. It may not be the most tactically varied army, but once you have it you can do most any of the barbarian hordes plus you have supporting contingents for dozens of other armies. @Brennus, I'm doing my armies in 15mm, but I'll look for similar-ish figures. |

In addition to Spanish costume there's Spanish headgear and Spanish weapons, but as I said, in the end it's up to you to decide just how morphologically liberal you want to be. |
