"Murat in Italy, 1815" Topic

The Gentlemen Wargamers gathered on Saturday for another 10mm Napoleonic game, this time a two-table "what if" extravaganza designed by Elliott, taken from Frederick Schneid's Napoleon's Campaigns in Italy 1805-1815.

Interesting – I refought this myself on the anniversary last week – (pictures etc. will appear on the Avon Napoleonic Fellowship site in due course) I found getting a reliable map the biggest challenge. All the map's I had (including Schneid's) contradicted each other and I ended up using Google maps and matching that with the accounts of the battle to establish the relative positions of the major features.

I love the scale impression achieved in these games. What a refreshing sight compared to the congested look of so many games.

The sense of scale is enhanced by two things: one is artful scenario design, the other is the fact that the miniatures are small and are packed onto the bases as tightly as practical (which, after all, is how units were formed up), giving the units a small footprint. Using a short focal length on some of the oblique shots exaggerates the effect slightly, but the overhead shots show that there really is a lot of maneuver room on the tables, which were only about 5'x 6'.

I'm with joaquin99, it's refreshing to see a game that doesn't look like a packed mall parking lot in Christmas! Thanks for sharing!

Nice to read and indeed the space gives a far better view of the battlefield.

I was rather disappointed in that there were no reports on what Murat was wearing at the battle, and how many ADC's he had to accessorize. :) Great write up, and thanks for the OOB's as well.
