It's being a long time coming but I have finally finished and based them "146th New York" Hallecks Infantry "Garrards Tigers"

I can appreciate the boys in blue, mainly as it gives me something to shoot at, charge and eventually after several years of struggle …surrender too!

The blue is rather good! What paints do you use? I only ask as me and my opponent/painter are starting to recruit forces for a Shiloh game and several of my Confederate units are wearing blue.

GoodOldRebel14 May 2015 2:25 p.m. PST

The command stand is particularly good, I do like the dramatically dying officer!

GoodOldRebel, thanks for the compliments. I use a range of paints from GW, Vallejo and miniature paints. The mid blue for the uniforms is Vallejo Prussian blue with colour party sky blue added to highlight. The sky blue is an old pot I have got but its nearly on its last legs so I will be looking for a replacement pretty soon. The dark blue on the officer is GW chaos black mixed with Regal blue ratio of 3 of blue to 1 of black, then just add more regal blue and finally a tad of white for the final highlight. It took a long time to get a blue I was happy with, when I couldn't find one I mixed it! I have in the past used household paint for miniatures, if the colours right then go with it, once its varnished its not a problem. The shot officer I have had for ages and couldn't bring myself to put it on a rebel base! So I put him to use! I'm not biased in anyway shape or form. Honest!! Ok maybe a little bit!
I cant get my head round both sides wearing dark blue in the first battles, I understand why it happened but it still seems a very risky. I suppose the more formal approach of battle made it less risky but even so, friendly fire seemed even more of a possibility. Its bad enough the enemy shooting at you never mind your own side.

The 1st South Carolina fired on the Tigers during the 1st Manassas. They were sent to help at the Stone Bridge, and instead fired on them. Lucky for the Tigers they were such bad shots, no Tigers were injured.

Thanks for your hard work there Bracken, I hope soon to put some pics up of my Orleans Guard Battalion in that blue!!

Haha I share your slight, barely noticeable bias and understand the pain of having a nice figure you just cant bear to use or leave out!

The pre-war militia system must shoulder much of the blame, the amount of blue-clad Confederates and grey-clad Yankees in those first few months must have been a nightmare!

TIG, who would of thought it, somebody being grateful for having bad shots on their own side. Glad no one was injured shooting your own side is not considering good form.

GoodOldRebel, thanks for that, the blue seems to have worked quite well. I'm not sure how well the new replacement blue will work but hopefully it will be a pretty close match. Me biased, OK! massively so I'm afraid. I know at times its a toss up of being accurate or go for a bit more parade ground look! The more rare units certainly add a fair bit of character and colour to any force.
As for the uniform element I suppose what else could of happened when a country goes to war against itself. I suppose any civil war must of encountered similar problems, although I suppose this would of being an issue in most wars, after all friendly fire is a term we all recognise and even with all todays technology it still occurs.

GoodOldRebel18 May 2015 4:56 a.m. PST

The 'rare' units turn up more frequently than is often credited, besides they make for a focal point amidst the grey and blue!

The early war uniforms offer some intriguing possibilities, Confederates wearing something other than shell jackets being my personal favourite!

I must admit, realism is sometimes the last thing on the agenda. I know that the Garibaldi Guard would probably of turned to the normal federal uniform sooner rather than later after supplies of the original uniform ran out! but how good do they look in their fancy uniforms and green feathered plumage. OK saying that realism is the last thing on the agenda is a slight over statement but how boring would it look if you painted all the federals in blue, blue and blue and the rebs in grey, grey and grey. Any units that add colour and character to any force are a welcome addition, and it helps break up the boredom of painting the same colours over and over again. The early war units do have an appeal that is lacking in the later years, even so the hunting shirts of the confederates add that bit more variety to the rebs! and colour of course

GoodOldRebel19 May 2015 9:11 a.m. PST

The blue-clad Confederates at Shiloh were predominantly Louisiana Regiments called up for 90 days to answer Beauregard's call for reinforcements prior to Shiloh itself. Gives me a chance to include some frockcoated figures among my Confederates which is always a nice change?

They only fought at Shiloh and some in the skirmish at Farmington before mustering out in May of 62, still I like them and they will make an interesting talking point

bracken Supporting Member of TMP20 May 2015 2:10 a.m. PST

The gray clad union regiments do have a certain appeal, so it may be a interesting theme to follow. Sometimes anything that stands out from the normal adds colour and flavour, Rushes lancers are a prime example! Lancers really serve no real purpose but once again they have that cool element. I mean who would want to charge a unit armed with muskets and have a out dated lance as a weapon! but the uniform and lance adds that bit extra of a talking point in any collection.

They do look nice.

Thanks Axebreaker, you swing a mean brush yourself! Your Confederates look spot on! just how you imagine they should look.

GoodOldRebel23 May 2015 10:17 a.m. PST

The Zouaves, Iron Brigade, Berdans, early war regiments all add something to any collection

bracken Supporting Member of TMP24 May 2015 12:02 p.m. PST

I'm planning on doing some marines for my Union Forces, now I know they will have limitations but hey I think they look smart and the paint job should be pretty straight forward!

GoodOldRebel24 May 2015 4:00 p.m. PST

My regular opponent is working on a battalion of sailors and another of marines, of First Corps manufacture!

Useful for coastal operations (we are planning a Honey Hill game), and the Mississippi?
