I was wondering if I could collect everyone's collective brains, I seem to have been carried away by enthusiasm before engaging my brain. I ended up painting two small groups of highland clansmen and various terrain pieces, my hope was to do a cattle raid or minor clan skirmish set in the 17th century…….however, now I need a set of rules. Anyone know of any skirmish rules that would fit the bill?

Donnybrook?

For my Border Reiver games I use the sections of "Mordheim" that apply to this period. IMO, it works very well for a mostly melee skirmish with leaders & followers variously equipped with swords, spears, bows, muzzle loaders, light armor & shields.

Swordplay would work. They're the free intro rules to Two Hour Wargames. Don't let the cover fool you, they work well for historical games. Just count firearms as crossbows and you'll be fine.

The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game works very well for small skirmishes of all kinds. It models hero or character types (=a chieftan, laird or his bodyguard) and swarms of scruffy nameless fellows (ghillies?) quite smoothly. As Ed said regarding his rules, you could treat firearms as bows/crossbows very easily.

Songs of Blades and Heroes, though it focuses on small numbers (about ten a side, max), could also work.

Witchfinder General – 17th Century skirmish rules for witch hunting. Ignore the supernatural element and you have a fine set of skirmish rules.

Their forthcoming supplement, Malificium, will include rules for Highlaners. And infact, these rules can be found on their Facebook site, or Forum.

Hot Trod and Red Hand is a free set of Border Reiver skirmish rules that covers cattle raids etc.

Donnybrook seems an exact fit. Got the rules recently, they're a very entertaining read. I've about 30 Highlanders on the painting queue too. :-)
