How Critical are the basing depths for V&B and Blucher ?

Is there a mechanism or reason why troops based on 3x3 bases for V&B would work less well than the 3x2 basin suggested in Blucher ? What about the V&B 3x1.5 bases ? (Spain and Britain).

If not why, I am at a loss to understand why Sam – who has oft said his rules need no rebasing – has chosen this approach

In Blücher and V&B brigade stands, units are on two ranks of batalion/ cav rgts. So it means you need 250-400m depth depending on actual formation to show actual unit manouever space.

If you have 3x 3 no pb for Blücher as most fights will be frontal between units, and if not depth will not play much role.

3x1.5 would be more pb, I'd suggest you use two behind each other for Blücher.

I can't see that the base sizes used in V&B would cause any problems in Blucher. All measurements are in base widths and are measured from the centre of the front of the base. The only odd base size in V&B is the 1.5" frontage for artillery. There's not many artillery units in Blucher so I would use 2 bases together for a 3" frontage. Saying all that I'm going to use 6mm on 50x50mm bases for everything …all works!

Not.

Like that said … tis not an issue. Just play and enjoy.

The 3x2 basing is merely a guide in Blucher. As stated elsewhere on this thread the measurement that really matters is the base width, not depth. Provided opposing armies are based to equal base width, depth can comfortably range from 1/2 BW to a full BW. That is with 3" BW, depth can be 1.5" to 3" with no issues.

More than 3" and you could turn the battlefield into a parking lot with interpenetration problems. Less than 1.5" and the bases are a bit shallow to give the feel of brigade formations.

So, in answer to your question, you have outlined the range between which base depth really won't make much (any) difference. 3x3 V&B bases will work fine. So will 3x1.5 bases. And 3x2 just happens to be half way between those extremes. If you don't believe me, then as someone else said, double up the bases for the shallower based army, so everyone is effectively using square bases. But in my opinion it won't be a game changer. Base width (not depth) is what matters. Put those minis on the table and start rolling dice!

Can't vouch for Blucher but have never used the actual bases sizes when I've played V&B – seems to work just fine…

Base depth doesn't matter in Blucher, so long as everyone has the same width.

The only issue that I can think of is if your base depth were more than you base width.

FWIW I was in the play test group, under Cae5ar's leadership, and whilst my infantry and cavalry bases will be the recommended 2 inches deep, my artillery units, which I intend to model with limbers, will be 3 inches to deep to accommodate same. I can't see it being an issue either, just clarify with your opponent how you will handle interpenetration so that its consistent.
