I want to form my 1815 Brits in units of 20. So I can easily use them for Command and Colours as well as other games, I ideally want to use 4 bases of two ranks, two of 6 for the center, and two 4's on the wings. This hould give me enough flexibility for forming squares etc. Couple of questions: How would you place the two flank figs on each side, in the front rank or behind each other on the extreme flank? Where would the flags look best, one on each center base? Just wondering how you guys have done it. |

I ideally want to use 4 bases of two ranks, two of 6 for the center, and two 4's on the wings. ??? "4 bases of two" = 8, "two of 6" = 12, "and two 4's" = 8. I make that 28, not 20? All you need for Command & Colours is 4 bases per unit. In fact if you just record hits with casualty markers you can use whatever number of bases you want. |

I would lay out the figures as they would have on the field. Elites on the flanks and colors inthe center. And I get it. Two bases of 6, two of 4, including the elites = 20. |

Bear in mind that for C&C Naps the number of bases in a unit is variable, for infantry from three to five. My pals with 15mm stuff just have them all based in fours (in two ranks of two) and assemble sufficient bases to form a unit. Flags usually go somewhere in the middle. Would five bases of four figs ea be unacceptable? |

I like as few bases as possible. I'd do all Impetus style bases if I could and just use markers as Major B suggests, I prefer how they look. My two rules are likely to be Black Powder and C&C. Can you represent square with a marker in BP? |

I based mine as 3 bases of four and 4 bases of two. The elites are each based as twos with 4 line infantry figures based as twos. |

Well, I reckon the minimum number of bases for a unit in Horse & Musket periods is two (if you want to represent different formations). side by side: line behind each other: column back to back: square end to end: march column (this only really works for 6mm or 2mm) |

As long as your bases are in a multiple of 2 you'll be able to represent a square. Six bases makes a really nice looking square, but I have my minis set up 4 bases to a unit and the square is easily recognised. |
