Wasn't the British infantry line only two ranks deep?

Brian Smaller09 May 2015 3:45 a.m. PST

I think they could be a face of a square.

Lovely to see that classic old set of toy soldiers made so useful. Terrific conversions, Paul.

Yes, I think it was. Could be double up to 4 in certain circumstances and when forming square.

Excellent painting and there's a lot of action in there – nicely constructed diorama effect. thumbs up

And it also shows what superb sculpts those figures are – they always struck me as a cut above most of the rest of my Airfix figures. And how old are they now ? Must be forty years. Or more ?

(PSR says 1972 – and, just to prove that one man's meat is another man's poison they don't think much of them at all – giving them a 6 for sculpting. Oh well.)

Thanks
The british inf did (mainly) deploy in two ranks in line and 4 when in square. At Waterloo(as far as Iīve read) virtually every Allied battallion was deployed 4 lines deep, due to the amount of troops in the space available and the threat of the French cuirassiers.
Ensign Edward Macready, 2nd Battalion 30th Foot
"no power on Earth could have formed a line of any kind of us but that of a line 4 deep."
I went for the halfway house of three, which arenīt clearly defined in strict lines.

Very nice – French and British napoleonic Airfix armies were the very first figures that I attempted to paint up as a teenager. they are fixed in my mind, so I know how bad the paint job was – though I was very proud of them then!

Your work really shows what these are capable of giving – and you have enthused me to have a go at painting some Hat cavalry that have been sitting on a shelf just looking at me for a couple of months now.

Me as well Normsmith..I had thousand of them (about 14,000 napoleonics) of which only a handfull still exist

Very nice! Now,what can you do with the French infantryman hopping on 1 foot?

See the clever conversions he did, let alone the quality of painting.

Nostalgia is not what it used to be……….

@Paul Bods: … And your figures are INDIVIDUALLY based!

Always a pleasure to see how you produce these little works of nostalgic art. Fantastic – so good to see the Airfix looking so nice
