…or are they private between members.

Are there any circumstances where the comments are likely to get the author Dawghoused, Locked Account, or elected onto the TMP Board of Governors?

This is being asked on behalf of a friend. Thank you.

I received an administrative punishment once because of a PM I sent to someone. So they at least can see them if someone reports them.

Winston Smith08 May 2015 10:35 a.m. PST

I have always assumed that they could. Whether or not they do is a different matter.

I have the power to read them. It's not easy to do.

I have only exercised this power on rare occasions, usually with the permission of an involved party.

usually

Private messages aren't private. Perhaps they should be relabeled as "Direct messages."

DS615108 May 2015 11:09 a.m. PST

They are private in the sense that they are directed to a "Private Party", not the entire forum.

I don't think this really needs a semantics argument. AFAIK, most forums have a mechanism for the administration to view everything that comes through the site.

If you fear your email being read, just put your own email in the text and discuss things between yourselves at a later date.

TMP, hell, the US government is reading them too, so what's the diff?

Privacy, on electronic media of any sort ????

Shirley, you jest…

The Beast Rampant08 May 2015 12:52 p.m. PST

I have occasionally wondered, but never really cared. I never held any expectation of privacy on the matter.

If I ever had any biz to discuss that was not Editor/TMP/member-friendly (which I haven't), I would conduct it through email.

@darthfozzywig

PM doesn't stand for Private Message.

"Privacy, on electronic media of any sort ????"

Subpoenaes duces tecum on computer accounts and ISP records will reveal some of the most amazing things.

In general, it's better to have the assumption that any device connected to the internet is inherently insecure and open.

You're reading my PMs?

Darn. My attempts to marshal my minions though TMP PMs & engineer a coup against Bill are doomed!
