I have an ancestor named Christian Landefeld who served in Hesse-Kassel army in the Prinz Karl Regiment in 1765. He had a son who was born in Obergude, Hersfeld-Rotenburg, Hesse. His son Johann Jost Landefeld served in the von Mirbach Regiment during the AWI and was wounded. Could anyone tell me about these two regiments and where they were garrisoned? I know my ancestors lived in the Landefeld and Obergude area of modern Hesse today. Also would these area be part of Westaphlie or Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt during the Napoleonic wars. Thank You Michael |

In 1803 the HRE Prince-Elector, Landgrave of Hesse, was also Prince of Hersfeld. Rotenburg and Hersfeld can be found south of Cassel on a map of Western Germany, 1789 The treaty of Tilsit in July 1807 recognized a new creation of Napoleon, the Kingdom of Westphalia, the former possessions of the house Hesse-Kassel were included. See Hersfeld on a map of Germany, 1812 You may be able to place the other locations on one of the available maps. Druzhina Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |

I had a look at the more recent German publication by Rudolf Witzel titled "Hessen Kassels Regimenter in der Alliierten Armee 1762". It provides the lineage of all units. Your AWI regiment Mirbach is IR 11, raised 1745 and had its garrison in Rothenburg-on-the-Fulda river and Melsungen. Prinz Karl, IR 9, raised 1702. By 1752 it had its garrisons in Eschwege (6 coys), Wanfried (2 coys), Lichtenau and Waldkappel (each 1 coy) That is all pretty much in the area of your ancestors birth town Obergude. Cheers, Christian crogges7ywarmies.blogspot.com |

Have a look at this website before you go. xn--hessen-militr-mfb.de I dealt with them about 10 years ago, whilst organising an AWI event at the National Army Museum in London, and they were a great bunch of guys. |

Have a go Michael, I'm from Frankfurt myself. That is a lot more south with most surrounding area formally being Hesse Darmstadt or catholic Mainz belongings, and as a result somewhat different from calvinist Lower Hesse. Lower Hesse is most picturesque, really. Many locations would be found along todays so called "ferry-tale route". Only recently I have been to Schweinsberg-on-the-Ohm, the border area separating Mid-Hesse from Lower Hesse. Awesome old architecture found here. I think I found Snow White's castle. The old ruin of Lehrbach castle completely wrapped in thorns. All very lovely. |
