"Gale Force 9 has announced two new expansion packs for their Firefly board game. The Serenity was never the only Firefly ship out there amongst the stars. It was a very popular starship design and as such, there are many variants that a captain could adapt to their purposes. The Esmeralda and Jetwash expansions each bring a new Firefly-style ship to the game. Depending on your play style, either the Esmeralda or Jetwash ships might better suit your smuggling… err… fair trading needs" link Main page fireflythegame.com Amicalement Armand |

Interesting. Didn't realize they had a boardgame out for this. Anyone played it? Is it any good? |

I own it and have played it once. I would love to play it more. Each player takes on the role of a ship captain. You build your crew, fly 'round the 'verse, buy gear, and complete jobs to earn payments. Jobs may be legal, illegal, and/or immoral (some crew won't do immoral jobs). Each crew and piece of equipment has skill points that help complete jobs (some jobs require combat skills, some guile, etc). Completing jobs for a patron makes you "solid" with that patron, which gives you certain benefits. Fail a job and you are no longer "solid" (and you don't want to be not solid with Nischka!) Each time you play you can select a different set of victory conditions. It has a definite feel for the series and is quite fun. |

I've played several times & Brian has a good summary. Its mostly about moving goods from point A to point B, with stops for a bit of troublemaking along the way. The game has good flair from the series & it pretty sharp. The game has a lot of pieces, so you better have a big table to set up on. It also plays well as a sole game, trying to accomplish the victory conditions in a fixed number of turns. |

Thanks for the reviews. Sounds interesting. Very similar to the Traveller RPG, in some ways, though with a bit more flair, instead of just using pen and paper, and perhaps a few minis. Thought it might make a useful backdrop for campaigns, or games using minis as well, in addition to just the straight up boardgame. Are there any rules for random encounters in space, or near planets, e.g. getting intercepted, and/or boarded by pirates, aliens, the planetary coast guard, etc.? |

Yup when you move more then on space you draw a card from either the Alliance space Navigation deck or the boarder space navigation deck for each space you move. results range from nothing happens to the alliance cruiser or reaver cutter being moved, mechanical break downs that you'll have to make a skill roll to repair or stop moving . or you might come across a convoy you can trade with (or maybe rob) as well as other possibilities. If you end up in the same space as the alliance ship and you have a warrant on you ship you'll have to pay a fine plus they'll arrest any crew members with warrants on them and you'll loss any contraband cargo you don't have safely hidden away. If the cannibalistic reavers board your ship you have to fight them and risk losing crew ans passengers here is the full rule book if you want to take a look PDF link |
