So the wagons at Fort Ligonier are painted a kind of dark red-brown: link Troiani shows them painted grey, like the carriage: link |

What do your RA/RIA re-enactor mates have to say? My guess – it's no more than that – is that the canvas was painted/waterproofed in the same way that the envelope-style canvas backpacks were. Hence the red (oxide) strikes me as a much more logical colour than grey for the tilts. The next most logical colour after the red would be natural canvas, which would be a tan/off white shade. Might be worth looking at some late-1780s/early 1790s prints and see what colour the tilts are in those. The red/grey combo also looks more colourful. |

I would generally agree. Obviously the smaller gear (spatter dashes, packs) could be black balled, but that wouldn't work for such a large piece. I was kind of surprised by the Troiani painting and wondered where he got that. A quick look at Morier's RA painting (slightly earlier period, but close enough) did not reveal any wagons. |
