Hello everyone! Just to let you know, I am in the UNITED STATES of AMERICA right now. To be exact, in NOLA. I will be seeing a few states (hopefully) and will try to go to Historicon. I will be celebrating my birthday here this coming 4th of July. I am pretty sure you'll celebrate my birthday too. Hope to see some of you here on my vacation! |

Hi Julia, welcome to the USA! I hope you have a great time. |

Be sure to get a muffuletta at Napoleon House. Really, just eat everywhere. I do miss the food there. |

Congrats! I hope you have a great time! NO Gulf Shrimp are delicious, so I recommend copious amounts of those, along with the Shrimp Jambalaya. |

Be sure to stop by Morning Call, a 24 hour donut and chicory coffee stand. Best donuts and coffee around. |
BrianW | 06 May 2015 12:23 p.m. PST |
If you want the best muffulatta, go to Central Grocery, just down from Jackson Square. BWW |
FingerandToeGlenn | 06 May 2015 12:47 p.m. PST |
Fried oyster po'boy. And do a haunted tour in the French Quarter…they're fun. |
DisasterWargamer | 06 May 2015 2:07 p.m. PST |
Make sure you get by the World War II Museum – downtown |

Welcome Julia! Hope you have a great time! And while you're in N'orleans… Don't miss out on Red Beans and Rice. (And I second Central Grocery for muffulatta. Best I ever had…) |

In my unasked opinion, the South has the best regional cuisine in the States, hands down, and New Orleans is one of the best places to eat in the South: so good times should be had. You are in the epicenter of American culinary delights. See above. And do remember that in our Southern states Mac and Cheese is considered a vegetable course. So be sure to eat your vegetables! (Hope you have a good time!) |
Weasel | 06 May 2015 5:59 p.m. PST |
Whatever you do, don't ask Americans about barbecue. Just eat it if it's offered. |
Saber6 | 06 May 2015 9:32 p.m. PST |
America is a BIG place. Enjoy the time it takes to get around. Lots of natural wonders as well as cultural ones |
Rebelyell2006 | 06 May 2015 9:45 p.m. PST |
Whatever you do, don't ask Americans about barbecue. Just eat it if it's offered. Be sure to get plenty of Brunswick stew too. If you have dietary restrictions against pork, be mindful that southern cuisine will sometimes involve cooking beans or vegetables with bacon or other bits of pork. |

"Sometimes"? |
Editor Julia | 07 May 2015 8:28 a.m. PST |
Thank you everyone! I saw few places and ate some of the popular foods here like, Beignets and the Fried Oyster Po Boy. Will be going around the city more. I'd seen French Quarter and French Market too. |

NOLA's is a great place to eat (although not cheap) and there is no pastry in the world better than a warm beignet at the Cafe de Monde Johnny's Po Boy on St. Louis is also fantastic |

Enjoy your tour. The New Orleans show which Bill once attended has moved this year a little north of Baton Rouge/ Bayou Wars and will be a little over a month. You might be able to hit a few gaming convention shows. Orlando's Recon was only a few weeks ago. June is a heavy month for shows. Nashville Nashcon is only a few weeks away. My next show. Have fun and others have said, be safe. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 07 May 2015 4:12 p.m. PST |
I'm encouraging her to attend Bayou Wars, but I don't know how easy it is to get up there from New Orleans for her. |
Rebelyell2006 | 07 May 2015 4:34 p.m. PST |
Greyhound round trip would be under $40 USD if she buys tickets in advance. Of course the Greyhound stop in St. Francisville is just one of their dump-and-run locations, and is a few miles from the Magnuson Hotel. Either she would have to walk or hope that a fellow attendee could drive her the rest of the way. |

Just be careful when checking out the sights. New Orleans has many good points, but it's also a dangerous city. It's less so in recent years as large numbers of the criminal element relocated after Katrina. (many sadly to my state) But it still has a high crime rate. But a little caution and common sense safety measures go a long way. Keeping your eyes open and always being aware of your surrounding are your best tools for crime avoidance. In any event, enjoy your trip. Oh…and don't make the same mistake I did on my first trip there and order a whole muffulatta, thinking it's a normal sandwich! ;-) Martin |

Thanks for taking the trash out on this thread, Armintrout. And yes, that includes my own sarcastic reply to the trouble makers. "Don't feed the trolls" is great advice as a general concept. But in the real world it can sometimes be too tempting to reply. My bad. ;-) Martin |
Rebelyell2006 | 08 May 2015 5:35 a.m. PST |
I wasn't feeding a troll. I was calling out a poster for making insensitive comments. |

Any updates on the travelogue? |

Yesterday was the my first time to attend a mass here in the US. I think I really need that because I feel like missing a lot of things. Nothing much change, staying at home most of the time. Anyways, I am still happy being here. It's not easy though because people are so busy. Unlike in my home country where people are every where. I am trying to find things to do, but not much really around. |
zippyfusenet | 13 Jul 2015 2:54 p.m. PST |
It's not easy though because people are so busy. True, that. The Free Enterprise System keeps us jumping. And we *like* it that way. (Slight sarcasm.) Some low-cost things to do in the US in the summer are: Visit some parks. Many of our cities have lovely, well cared for, underappreciated parks. Swim, sunbathe, drink a beer. If you have a pool or a beach. If you have no water, then skip the swimming part. Yard work. It's healthy exercise and your host will thank you. I'd say, avoid bars during the day. You may be surprised to find that many people who spend their days drinking in bars are socially disfunctional alcoholics. Where are you lately? |

I never left New Orleans, Louisiana. I wish the plan before me getting here will still work out (but it's almost impossible). It's getting tough here, I wish it's not like this while I am here. I cannot do any of the things you said except gardening and walking to parks. I rarely go out of the house, only Sundays for the mass. I'm a bit missing. :( |
Editor Julia | 15 Jul 2015 3:13 p.m. PST |
Honestly, I am not fine, but I'm still thinking positive. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 15 Jul 2015 4:30 p.m. PST |
You could play some war games Editor Julia. Two armies are in the mail. |
Winston Smith | 16 Jul 2015 6:03 a.m. PST |
I am sure they will help. |
Editor Julia | 16 Jul 2015 8:10 a.m. PST |
You are right Oranjzicht. I'm all alone all day. |
wehrmacht | 16 Jul 2015 11:14 a.m. PST |
Can you go out for a walk? New cities can be fun to walk around, as long as you have water, some food and a map. |
duncanh | 16 Jul 2015 1:06 p.m. PST |
I know kyoteblue. Her employer? |
duncanh | 16 Jul 2015 2:02 p.m. PST |
Well, to expand my original somewhat cryptic comment. Here goes. This applies to the United Kingdom only, that's the UK. The situation as far as I understand it. Editor Julia has come to the USA and is not happy. My advice, take it for what it is Editor Julia, go to the police station, hand yourself in, explain why. You've done nothing wrong Editor Julia. Take every bit of evidence you can. Electronic to show you've been scammed. If you do that then it will be scary, but the police will generaly treat you as the victim, not the criminal. In general, the police want to catch criminals, not those who have made a mistake. Ask for a lawyer as soon as you are in the Police station. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 16 Jul 2015 2:55 p.m. PST |
I've never heard of people turning themselves in to the police due to boredom. |
Editor Julia | 16 Jul 2015 3:10 p.m. PST |
That is not the reason, but yeah. I hope police can help in situation like this, but not really. Or maybe call 911. Haha |
zippyfusenet | 16 Jul 2015 3:21 p.m. PST |
Sorry the trip is turning out to be a disappointment, Julia. I hear that parts of New Orleans are lovely (though I've never been there). Public transportation is sketchy in most US cities, but there is usually some. Make the most of what there is where you are. Public libraries are usually free and often offer computers with internet access. Whatever you do, *don't* just sit around the house watching television. Many American are isolated in housing with no transportation and limited social contacts, as you seem to be. Far too many of us zone out on the tube and completely lose ourselves. The internet in many cases is an interactive version of the tube. This behavior makes too many of us depressed, hostile and obese. You are better off running around the block to improve your fitness, or doing weight training or yoga to fill your time. Much better off. |
Editor Julia | 16 Jul 2015 3:23 p.m. PST |
I'll go out later to the city and meet Filipino friends. We rarely hangout. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 16 Jul 2015 3:32 p.m. PST |
I don't think Julia will ever be obese. |
Winston Smith | 16 Jul 2015 5:01 p.m. PST |
There are immigration attorneys who work for free. They are funded by pro immigration influence groups. Some are publicly funded. Talk to one before you do anything rash. |
Noahs Ork | 17 Jul 2015 7:13 a.m. PST |
Seriously guys, bad jokes about little miniature armies is the last thing she probably needs right now. Not cool. Julia, is everything OK? You sound quite upset. Have you thought about going home? |
cazador | 17 Jul 2015 8:24 a.m. PST |
Sorry to be a bit slow on the uptake, what's the problem here? Vacation over long? Immigration problems???? Over to you, Mr. A. Hope it all works out OK |
cazador | 17 Jul 2015 8:28 a.m. PST |
Duncanh, there is of course one fundamental difference between dealing with police forces in the US and the UK (even the Met)….. |
Editor Julia | 17 Jul 2015 8:56 a.m. PST |
I'm okay guys, no worries. Thank you for the concern. Maybe it's culture shock. Seems like everything is going on the right track. I just need to keep on going. I'm with my boyfriend. It's just that he is new here in New Orleans and does not know people around. Works all day long. It's not immigration problem. I have 10 years multi-entry and I am not staying. I can go back anytime. |
