Good afternoon

We're considering relocating to Cary, NC. I was curious if anyone knew of any gaming stores or clubs in the area. Also, if someone could give me some honest input about the area I'd really appreciate that as well…

Get in touch with these guys, it is a fun convention I have been to several times.

Cary is great--I lived there for 9 years--you'll love it! Quite a few gamers, as well.

Thank you – Glad to hear that. Your comments line up with what I've been reading. Time to take a vacation down there and see how much we like it.

I live just outside Cary next to the NC State Fairgrounds and am a TSS member. There is a store in Cary, The Gamers Armory and we do various events and games all over Raleigh, Durham, and Cary. I am not sure where you are coming from but Cary has one of the lowest Crime Rates in NC. It is second only to Pinehurst. It has the most expensive apartments in the area. It has some really good places to eat. Let me know if there is anything you need to know.

I'm coming from up north so your information helps tremendously. Housing seems reasonable. I was also going to look for an apartment for my elderly inlaws.

Maybe I should look for housing in Cary and an apartment just outside Cary for my Inlaws? I also heard Apex is a nice place to live.

If you don't mind me asking – how is the job market for technology?

Cary and Apex are very similar, with Apex being a bit further out, and with correspondingly lower housing prices.

Cary is HQ for SAS Institute sas.com/en_us/home.html

Never been there myself but SAS is a good software product.

I recently moved to NC by way of 11 years in CA and most of my life in WI. I'm very much a Northerner myself but I've grown to really like the triangle area. You should fit in well in Cary since the locals call it Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. Heh! For me the main draw is the proximity to Civil War and RevWar history of which there is a ton within an easy driving distance to central NC.

The Raleigh-Durham-Cary triangle area is a major hub of technology, biotech, and aerospace. The research triangle is called that for a reason because there are dozens of major research based companies HQd there. In the past 20 years this area has exploded with development, new companies, housing, money, and people. The only other place I've seen as many BMWs as this area would be back in the Bay Area of California. Best part about NC is a significantly lower cost of living. High end housing is in the 250k-400k range whereas in many places that won't get you much.

The best part I've learned about NC (aside from all the military history of course) is that for the most part part folks here are easy going and laid back. There is no pretentiousness here. There is money, great food, some very trendy and very interesting areas, but almost no pretentiousness. Also keep in mind there are something like 2 dozen major universities in this area including Duke, NC State, Chapel Hill and many many others. Those schools bring a lot of energy and money and interesting stuff to the triangle area. Just two weeks ago we discovered a tiny town 40 miles outside of Raleigh called Sahaxapahaw that has some of the best food we've had in NC, including a to die for butcher called Left Bank Meats that preps all local meats on site fresh each day. And speaking of food if you like BBQ this area has some FANTASTIC styles to choose from.

As was already mentioned The Gamers Armory is a great local game store with a ton of gaming space. It serves as a great base from which to meet people for gaming. Some locals guys put on a day event there every few months, and there is a small local con twice a year. You will also be within 3-4 hours of Fall In, Cold Wars, and Historicon up in VA and PA. There is also Atomic Games which has a huge selection of stuff and an even bigger gaming area though much of it seems focused on CCGs, RPGs, and fantasy/scifi.

I need to get more gaming in myself, I've been so busy building my collections and with work for the past few years I forget to slow down and game. If folks here in and around NC want to start setting up some times and places to meet up, count me in.
