I have often seen reference to General Scarlet's black coat at the battle of Balaclava. Wargamers often paint him so. Reading Hibbert's excellent The Destruction of Lord Raglan he refers to General Scarlet's blue coat.

Does anyone know which is right?

I suspect that he would be wearing a general's very dark blue frock coat. To a confused eye-witness on the day, the dust-covered general may have looked to be dressed in black.

Yes that would make absolute sense.

The thing is it should result in other British Generals coats being described as black which they are not. That's why I wondered if there is an actual reference.

As Crimean War General's go Scarlet seems to have been a very decent old skin and I'd like to get him right.

Further to this "dark blue" coats for officers in the 19th century were actually a mixture of blue and black thread – I think the French general's "dark blue" was actually more black than blue

The gentleman might even of had two coats… but often dark blue military uniforms will be nearly black, as they were in the ACW.

He probably had quite a few coats British Generals did not travel light.

And the plot thickens in the last few pages of The Destruction of Lord Raglan Hibbert mentions General Simpson's black coat…

Great book for anyone interested in the Crimean War and very cheap via Amazon. Warner's one next postman willing.
