… Ronald Reagan said it was hard to believe.

"Master Sgt. Raul "Roy" P. Benavidez was a young special forces linguist and medic when, in 1965, he stepped on a mine in Vietnam and was evacuated to the United States. He was told he'd never walk again. But, wanting to return to Vietnam, he began a nightly ritual of attempting to relearn how to walk despite explicit orders from his doctors.

A year later, his doctor was standing in Benavidez's hospital room with medical discharge papers. The doctor made a deal with Benavidez that he'd tear up the discharge if Benavidez walked out of the room. Benavidez did one better by walking out of the ward…"

I grew up in El Campo where Mr. Benavidez made his home.

I went to school with his son and daughter and had the chance to listen to him speak twice in my life. Once in high school and again at graduation from the Sapper Leader Course at Leonardwood.

Interesting tidbit. One of the local car dealerships, Gale Buetel Chevrolet, gave him a new car every year as a gift. It was nice publicity and a tax write off for them. Mr. Benavidez did not keep those cars, except once every five years or so, he raffled them off for charity. It was quite the event.

He drove a well maintained El Camino as his daily driver.

I wonder how many people have ignored tango and therefore will not be exposed to this post?

Benavidez was in my fathers unit in Vietnam (Project Sigma, which became CCS of SOG) as well as part of the Special Forces Association. Had the fortune of speaking with him several times over the years before his passing. He once told me he wishes he had never go into combat in flip-flops, as it affected his feet for the rest of his life. Odd tip, that.

I'd seen his El Camino, Midochondria, as I had a '71 Ranchero and he gave me a hard time about it!
