The first public photos have been released of the room-sized diorama of the Battle of Chunuk Bair at The Great War Exhibition in Wellington, populated with five thousand 54mm figures. The diorama is the brainchild of world-famous movie director and WW1 buff, Sir Peter Jackson. He enlisted the former chief of New Zealand's defence forces, Lt General (rtd) Rhys Jones, himself a keen wargamer, to lead this official WW100 commemoration project. Alan and Michael Perry, two of the foremost miniature figure sculptors in the world, were engaged to produce the figures; and leading movie special effects company Weta Workshop to make the massive terrain. The 5000 miniatures were painted by 140 enthusiastic Kiwi wargamers organised in teams of volunteers right across the country. So pop on over to the official Mustering The Troops blog for loads of photos of this amazing diorama: link Here are some sample pics from the blog:

Absolutely incredible. If these were available commercially I would be really tempted to game this--so it's probably a blessing for the pocketbook! |

Amazing. Something I have always wanted to do was to work on a museum diorama. |

Problem is, once you are done checking out the diorama, they make you go around two more times. |

I wonder who we know helped out with the figures? With dioramas like this you could look a dozen times and still find new things. |

Congratulations to Sir Peter, the Perry twins, a Weta Workshop, you (Roly / Areis, Rhys Jones (aka 'Armchair General')and all the Kiwis who gave of their time and talents. I have family flying into Wellington in October, so will advise them to go to the exhibition. The calendar shows December 31, 2015 as the end date…hope that is incorrect and the exhibition extends into 2016 and beyond since the effects of 1915 didn't end on December 31, 1915. |

This diorama is beyond inspiring. 130 wargamers did the figure painting from all over NZ. Two weeks to place all the terrain greenery. An amazing achievement. A big salute to all who partook in this magnificent effort. |

A great looking diorama. I have enjoyed following the blogs of some of the gamers who worked in it. Brian Smaller's behind the scenes pictures of the unfinished segments as they worked on it was really fun. |

That's fantastic! I love dioramas, and that's got to be one of the best ever made. |
