"The upgraded D variant of China's J-11 fighter jet has made its maiden flight, Chinese media reported. The jet reportedly has new radar and an air refueling system. The J-11D model, which was tested in the air for the first time on Wednesday, is an upgraded variant, based on the J-11B, with an AESA radar and more composite materials. Its radar, EW systems, FBW systems, and communications equipment are the same as those aboard the Shenyang J-16…"

I really feel like the opposition is making more headway in military advances than we are. Leaping to the F-35 and F-22 level is costly but it seems we have remained at a standstill in so many other areas.

China will always be behind the USA militarily as long as they can't project their power. Only the USA can bring force directly to their shores, although China's advances will make it increasingly difficult with each passing decade. Advances in missile tech and building airbases on the Spratleys are also signs that China wants to reduce The USA's range of operation. Strategically, these are still only responses to American strength.

@Pythagoras: It is a heavily upgraded Su27. So it's about like an F16E/F. Old airframe design but top-line avionics.
