When I paint, I listen to Old Time Radio shows. I've been on a Gunsmoke binge. I'm about 60 episodes in. link I love it, but I just have to ask…between the 200+ radio episodes and the TV show…just how many men did US Marshal Matt Dillon kill? He's a mass murderer!! |

To quote Lucas McCain in the MAD Magazine parody of "The Rifleman" (The Rifle, Man): "I'm a peace lovin' man. And there's nothin' more peaceful than a pile of dead bodies." But to answer your question (for the TV show): "The show aired from 1955 to 1975, with a total of 635 episodes. Marshal Matt Dillon (played by James Arness) shot 138 men and 7 women; he himself was shot 56 times." From here (about the third question down): link |

56 Times??!! Can you imagine anyone getting shot 56 times and living? That's a lot of flesh wounds! |

I have lots of figures that have been shot more than 56 times and they are just as real as Marshal Matt. None, maybe all combined have never shot a total of 138 men and 7 women. |

I listened to a bunch of them a few years back. They were the pinnacle of radio drama, when the medium was at its most mature. Shooting a woman on the air in the late 50s was pretty scandalous. Lots of great adult-themed shows. The era was not nearly as button-downed as people like to think. |

Radio rules, I'm a great fan of the genre and all those wonderful podcasts done by some wonderfully talented people, my thanks to them for great entertainment. Agree OTR and others are great to paint to. Cheers happy painting and listening. |

BTW – The Six-Shooter, with James Stuart, is a great one-season addition to Gunsmoke. |

And William "Cannon"Conrad voiced U.S,Marshal Matt Dillon in the classic radio version of "Gunsmoke". Classic 'theater of the mind'. |

Lucius: I'll check it out. Thanks. Old Slow Trot: I think of that every time. Great voice, but would have been a tough guy to take seriously as a marshal. |
