I was pleased to read Sebastian Palmer's enthusiastic review of David Howarth's Waterloo book, since Howarth is one of my favorite authors. Another subject that benefits from his wonderfully descriptive writing is the 1066 campaign, which he narrates in "1066: The Year of the Conquest". His opening chapter, which describes life in pre-Conquest Saxon England, is still with me, decades after I first read it.

I have this book too, and it's a good wholistic read. Definitely worth picking up if you like the period.

I recollect reading it 30+ years ago, I still remember it being a good read (overdue for a re-read) thumbs up

I enjoyed it as well, many years ago. I think I still have my copy--definitely worth a re-read.

My first 1066 book as a young child, and my first introduction to the conquest, still a soft spot in my heart and a place on my shelf.
