Post-World War II Japan has been known as a pacifist nation and is constitutionally barred from engaging in war as a means to settle international disputes. However, loose interpretation of the pacifist constitution -- as well as and recent revisions to the U.S.-Japan defense guidelines -- have opened the door to Japan playing a bigger role in global military operations. As Japan steadily widens the scope of its military, some are questioning this new direction and the role the military, known as the Japan Self Defense Forces, will play in regional and global affairs. Just about every single company and governmental agency/department/division in Japan has their own mascot. This isn't particularly weird, it's pretty much like MacGruff (for those Americans who remember that character). |

Must dig out "cute baby animals in military uniforms" recruiting materials from JSDF … Still regret only taking one of the sheets, instead of all four. The sequence of expressions on the recruiter's face when we entered was classic. He was facing away from the door, turn around with and expression of excitement and hope, and then his face just fell as he saw the gaijin … The "yeah, yeah, whatever" shooing motion as I asked if I could take the sheet capped it off. |
