One of four forward deployment bases for A10s, somewhere in Germany. I remember one of them was Norvendich (sp?) but can't for the life of me remember the other three. There were A10s at RAF Ahlhorn south of Bremen when I was with 2/1 Cav in 2AD FWD in Garlstedt on the other side of Bremen in the late 80s. Were you one of those crazy bastards that used to practice landing on the autobahn down there? |

AT Fort Bragg N.C. with 82nd. We theoretically were supposed to drop into Fulda, slow down what we could and the survivors would exfiltrate west hitting the bad guys from behind. Sounded like pretty wishful thinking. so who the heck knew where going to be. |

AT Fort Bragg N.C. with 82nd. We theoretically were supposed to drop into Fulda, slow down what we could and the survivors would exfiltrate west Oh man, what genius came up with that? Sure, let's fly highly-skilled light infantry in propeller-driven aluminum cans into the most densely-packed air defense network on the planet. Nothing could go wrong there. Well, not for more than a few minutes, I guess. |

Hopefully that mission would have never come about. I was in the 101 before I was assigned to the 2ID in the ROK. God forbid the 101 would have had to try to help with exfil, etc., of the 82d. Or would have been there or near there right along with most of the rest of the 18th ABN XXX. When I got back from 22 months in the ROK, I was assigned to the 197th Mech Bde at Benning. The Bde was the Heavy element of the 18th. Maybe, like at Arnhem, the Mech/Armor force would have tried to link up with the 82d and/or 101 … We saw how well that op worked back in '44 … |

My Air Cav Troop's mission was to be part of the receiving force for III Corps at their POMCUS sites on the Dutch border west of Muenchen-Gladbach. We were the only U.S. Cav units going west when the proverbial balloon went up! So from our Kaserne,we had to take a ferry boat across the Weser to the private German airfield where our helos were based, saddle up and fly down dodging whatever nukes, missiles and strike aircraft happened to be going in either direction, secure the Brigade assembly area and fight off whatever airborne or Spetznatz the pact threw at the sites. We were supposed to stay alive long enough to bring the U.S. Third Imperial Corps into the theater, and once reunited with the rest of the Squadron from Ft Hood, lead 2AD to victory, saving the collective bacon of the BAOR and the rest of NorthAG, and ultimately defeat the communist horde someplace between Berlin and Moscow! |
