Scenario building and started to look at GoogleEarth for my GDP (1978-1980). Mine was near Hilders ( link ) just east of Fulda

Somewhere in the North Atlantic with the ASW Strike Force…

Or possibly unconscious behind a bar in the Reeperbaum…

Down near the Czech border…If we made it there….I actually have a photo of the "proposed battle position" for my tank "when" they came across the border…I also took a photo of the area I was overwatching…so I could get my crew to understand it….and realize it….and learn it…

I understand the "if we made it there" I was starting in Mannheim

I think my unit was slated for Norway in a NATO SHTF scenario. So, assuming we made it across the Atlantic, someplace chilly but scenic.

I would say different areas depending on the year in question (USMC 1983-2004), assuming mainly Middle East to Far East, as majority of my permanent duty stations were west coast and Okinawa.

One of four forward deployment bases for A10s, somewhere in Germany. I remember one of them was Norvendich (sp?) but can't for the life of me remember the other three.

Somewhere in Germany, if we were federalized fast enough (my NG armor unit was slated for NATO, but exactly where seemed to change every 6 months). Otherwise, San Diego (waiting for the big birds to take us to the party…).

Bischofsheim, if our tanks got that far before the crap hit the fan.

Somewhere between there and Mannheim if we didn't.

There were A10s at RAF Ahlhorn south of Bremen when I was with 2/1 Cav in 2AD FWD in Garlstedt on the other side of Bremen in the late 80s.

Were you one of those crazy bastards that used to practice landing on the autobahn down there?

AT Fort Bragg N.C. with 82nd. We theoretically were supposed to drop into Fulda, slow down what we could and the survivors would exfiltrate west hitting the bad guys from behind. Sounded like pretty wishful thinking. so who the heck knew where going to be.

Major Mike29 Apr 2015 6:38 p.m. PST

Near Kronach on the East German border. The battalion I was task organized with was chopped to the 2nd ACR and we went straight to the border.

Our firing battery positions (8' howitzers) were vicinity of Fulda providing reinforcing fires to the 11th ACR ('84-'86). I presumed we were so far forward, so we could fire our nukes into the DDR. Joy.

Comiso Italy we would disperse on Sicily and fire when needed. Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty outlawed our weapon system.

For a few minutes, anyay.

Hiding under a desk in Idaho, though if things really went pear-shaped, I'd probably be vapor (Air Guard base is about 5 miles south, and then there's Mountain Home AFB about 55 miles east).

Jozis Tin Man30 Apr 2015 11:55 a.m. PST

Local Guard Armory, then convoy to Ft. Bragg and go wherever the 35th Signal Brigade went. We were their Troposcatter range extension company.

Further north in the ROK than Javelin98. We were the covering force for the evacuation of Panmunjom.

Oh man, what genius came up with that? Sure, let's fly highly-skilled light infantry in propeller-driven aluminum cans into the most densely-packed air defense network on the planet. Nothing could go wrong there.

Well, not for more than a few minutes, I guess.

williamtheconker02 May 2015 12:24 p.m. PST

somewhere between Hohna and Celle, if we didn't break down!

My Mech Bn being the Western Corridor, we'd probably be there with you.

Hopefully that mission would have never come about. I was in the 101 before I was assigned to the 2ID in the ROK. God forbid the 101 would have had to try to help with exfil, etc., of the 82d. Or would have been there or near there right along with most of the rest of the 18th ABN XXX. When I got back from 22 months in the ROK, I was assigned to the 197th Mech Bde at Benning. The Bde was the Heavy element of the 18th. Maybe, like at Arnhem, the Mech/Armor force would have tried to link up with the 82d and/or 101 … We saw how well that op worked back in '44 …

ScoutJock04 May 2015 10:21 a.m. PST

My Air Cav Troop's mission was to be part of the receiving force for III Corps at their POMCUS sites on the Dutch border west of Muenchen-Gladbach.

We were the only U.S. Cav units going west when the proverbial balloon went up!

So from our Kaserne,we had to take a ferry boat across the Weser to the private German airfield where our helos were based, saddle up and fly down dodging whatever nukes, missiles and strike aircraft happened to be going in either direction, secure the Brigade assembly area and fight off whatever airborne or Spetznatz the pact threw at the sites.

We were supposed to stay alive long enough to bring the U.S. Third Imperial Corps into the theater, and once reunited with the rest of the Squadron from Ft Hood, lead 2AD to victory, saving the collective bacon of the BAOR and the rest of NorthAG, and ultimately defeat the communist horde someplace between Berlin and Moscow!
