I'm looking for some models which I can use as Laestrygonians to oppose my 28mm Ancient Greek heroes. I'm pretty sure that there aren't any purpose-made models for this, so here's a wish list:

  • Laestrygonians are large humans. Something in the range of 30mm-40mm would do, I expect. They're bigger than regular folks, but not 20 feet high or anything like that.
  • Clothing should be either loincloths or simple tunics. A few cloaks or necklaces of either beads or bones would be fine, but nothing too ornate.
  • A little bit of ugliness or the occasional deformity might work, but I'm not looking for twisted mutants.
  • They'll use slings, axes, spears, swords and/or thrown rocks for weapons. This is probably the simplest part, as most of these can be converted easily enough if needed.
So, any ideas? I've already considered 40mm plastic "army men" cavemen (too crude and too hard to find), Savage Orcs with a head swap (too many fetishes and bones) or Games Workshop Ogres (too grotesque and the clothing is all wrong).

Maybe Old Glory 25s Ice Trolls from their Ghost fantasy line?

They seem to hit all your specific points, but are a bit cartoony & may be too orc-y.

This is my first thought for your Giants:

These Marx figures are very well done and meet you needs. The site above has them at 45mm, but 6" seems to be the more common size. Such as:

A look through irregularminiatures.co.uk 42mm range link might give something usable. The geneic ancients in kilt . Might be a starting point.

Call to arms 54mm Zulus might do the trick. Fairly easy to shave off any extra ornaments you don't need.

These guys look pretty cool. And at 1.5" tall -- just under 40mm -- they might look good with your 28mm Greeks, especially once painted.

Wow, DyeHard posted EXACTLY what I was going to suggest! (Except I don't have any images at hand.) Those Marx or Marx-pirated cavemen are useful for all manner of savage giant troglodytes in Pulp, Fantasy, or Sci-Fi settings.

Hi,
I'm using the Lucid Eye neaderthals. They are slightly taller than 28mm figures but much more heavily built. They are useful if you don't see the laestrygonians as giants and quite versatile as primitives for a whole host of pulp settings.

All the best,
George.

Thanks, guys – there are some excellent ideas there!

  • I do like the Marx cavemen even though they're slightly larger than I had envisaged. They're even throwing boulders, which is very much in keeping with the myths. It might not be so easy to get such models at a reasonable price though – especially outside the USA?
  • The Lucid Eye Neanderthals would work, though they're wearing rather more fur than I was seeking. Nice models, though.
  • Irregular Miniatures don't have many pictures of their 42mm range, I think. Still, they're just about cheap enough to take a chance on…
  • Thanks also for the other ideas, but I don't think they're quite what I want.
Aargh! I don't know what to do.

Check this for Irregular. Quite toy soldier in style.

These are probably too big and too expensive, but the Otherworld Hill Giants (and Ettin) are pretty close to how I've always pictured them:

Also big, and only a single pose, but the Thoas figure is nice in an orc-ish sort of way:

I'll keep thinking…

Otherworld ogres? Still expensive, but 45mm:

I got my "Marx" cavemen as shown above from a toy or game set, very cheap, in a large box toy store some years ago. The cavemen come in various poses and also with spears and clubs. If you scout around (and check eBay), you should be able to locate some prehistoric cave sets and cavemen toys, I should think, and not have to buy "vintage" collector's pieces. Those old Marx moulds have been sold off to various manufacturers and recast for new products, or just pirated by other toymen and sold in various forms and disguises.
