So I did the yearly demo of PFM Starships at KingdomCon, and caught the attention of the guy and gal who run the game area at Comic-Con. They invited me to demo there this year. Yes -- Comic-Con International, the big one in San Diego that's expecting 100K people this year. At the moment, I'm still talking about space and scheduling, but it occurs to me that I might want to get in touch with some minis manufacturers and display some of their wares along with the demo. (I'm thinking a couple of samples from each manufacturer, plus business cards to their websites.) Obviously, this would depend on whether I get enough space. Does this sound like a reasonable idea? (Disclaimer: just because the ceiling is 100,000 sets of eyeballs, it's still Comic-Con, and not Game-Con. I'm thinking that I'll be lucky if 1% of them show up in the game area.) |

Well, congratulations. I'd expect a healthy number of punters at your game, if I were you. I look forward to a report. |

Better to expect too many and be fairly ready for them, than to not be ready and look silly. :) |

Hi Remember the other problem is getting a hotel room. Mosta re already booked and if not are high priced.

at 1% you're still looking at 3x exposure of a local con. good luck. |

I sell super hero minis :) Might be a good fit? |

Thanks, everybody. I'm not sure how big a deal this really is, but it is cool to be invited. Wackmole9 — I live in Escondido, so I'll be commuting every morning. The issue for me will be getting my stuff into the building. Luckily, a spaceship game doesn't need a lot of terrain. (For KingdomCon I basically used a pair of plastic totes.) Fergal — I sell a spaceship game. Do you do spaceships along with the superheroes? |

:) I meant a good fit for the con, not necessarily with your game. |

Meiczyslaw, It is a big deal, congratulations! You must be a great GM to have caught their eye, but it sounds like even though you live so close, you've never been to Comic-Con yourself before. It is no longer really about comics. Comics certainly play a part, but it's much more "Pop-Culture Con," with emphasis on genre movies, TV shows and Computer Gaming. Last year's attendance was actually about 130,000, and it grows a little bit every year, and my guess is, no matter what exact location they place your game in, it will have more eyeballs on it than ever before. I work in the movie and TV business, so I've gone a few times over the years for work-related reasons, but last year my kids all wanted to go, so we spent the entire weekend. I hadn't been to the Con since 2002, and though it was already a huge and crowded event back then, last year blew my mind. It's great that you don't need to unload a ton of gaming stuff. Since you're a guest running an event you should get on-site parking. If not, it is possible to find parking within reach of the convention itself, as long as you are willing to pay and walk a few blocks. Having merchandise on-hand that ties in to your game is a great idea. My guess is if you can find a company to team up with it would be a "win-win" situation for both of you. Congrats again and have a lot of fun, and best of luck with your game at the mother of all Cons! |

The last time I went was on the wife's professional badge a few years back, and spent most of the time taking notes in the digital art panels. That side of the Con is much less crazy. I don't think I've ever set foot inside Hall H. I've actually done a demo at Comic-Con before, but that was for the original DoomTown, and it was in the retailer space. That was crazy busy. Apparently, the organizers haven't decided whether the game space is going to be in the mezzanine or the Hilton, and the rules are going to be different based on where we end up. (No actual sales in the mezzanine, so I'd be passing out business cards pointing to Wargame Vault again.) |
