Not really "trenches" though, are they? Just double-sided earthworks.

I'm surprised at how few companies seem to have considered doing terrain tiles with genuine sunken trenches – especially given the growing popularity of 6/10/12/15mm figures for WW1 and the minimal depth required at those sizes. Even the well-researched Early War Miniatures trench system has obvious slopes. I would have thought tiles would be easier to butt together as well.

They are meant to be used on a regular gaming table without having to dig into the table.

Yes, I realise that. I'm just saying that I'm surprised how few (if any?) companies appear to be even looking at a more realistic solution to table-top trenches via terrain tiles.

You have a point my friend.

Tiles aren't used as often as you might think, because few manufacturers make them the same size.

I just use the printout trenches from Lord Zsezse Works. There is one version of the No Mans' Land themed set which has the modular trench printed flat seperately from the ground texture.

It should be noted that breastworks were extensively used in French Flanders. The water table was too high and could not support the more typical trenches. Battles like Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Fromelles, and many others were fought from and in trenches such as shown above. They were still referred to as 'trenches'.

I think TSS will produce trench tiles if asked.
