I am curious as to why the SS eagle is worn on the left sleeve of the uniform jacket. Was there a formal reason for this?

Jamesonsafari27 Apr 2015 1:02 p.m. PST

Because the published uniform regulations say that's where it goes.
Somebody on the uniform committee thought it looked good there.
Plus rank already traditionally on the right sleeve so more stuff there just crowds the sleeve. Putting the SS eagle badge on the left gives the tunic some balance

James, I appreciate the fact that you took the time to write. I was hoping that someone could speak to the origin of that decision… who was the "somebody" who or what committee thought it looked good there. Your answer might be as good as knowledge on this subject can offer at this time, but what you have given me is basically "it is what it is because it is", and I was hoping that someone might be able to offer a more detailed, fact based explanation. It might be as simple as the fact that the SS/Himmler/Hitler decided the SS should wear their eagle in the same place that the Nazi armband was traditionally worn. I'd be surprised to find that a more detailed answer doesn't exist. Again, thanks for taking the time to write.

Since my initial question may not have been enough to the point, let me give a couple examples of what I mean when I ask for a "formal reason." I believe that the SS runes on the right collar were adopted first by Sepp Dietrich for Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler to differentiate that organization from the rest of the SS. In Feb. 1934 the honor chevron for old campaigners was adopted for the right sleeve of the SS uniform. As I said in my initial question about the eagle's placement, I'm just curious.

link and ss link

marcus, thank you. I hadn't looked a the broader German uniform link but I did check out the one on the SS before I wrote my question. They are both very interesting, but unless I've skimmed over a sectuib on the SS placement of the eagle on the left sleeve, neither link seems to talk about that. Thanks again.

I think the Heer generally objected at the time and Hitler was still being nice to them.

The SS wanted to look different from the Heer? If they put it above the breast pocket they'd look pretty much the same from a distance.

Just a thought, but when they saluted it may look a bit funny if it were on the arm being raised?

Battle Phlox27 Apr 2015 9:40 p.m. PST

I think the article Marcus Arilius linked explains that the Eagle replaced the red arm band.

I missed that in my read of the link but that makes sense to me in fact it was my initial guess as can be seen in my second posting above. I was just looking for some clarification. Thanks to both Battle Phlox and Marcus Arils for clearing that up.

I think it was the Heer call, not the SS and at the time the SS was rather miniscule so the Army won out.

As above, that second link is extremely comprehensive.

The sleeve eagle replaced the armband.
