Any recommendation of the best book, nonfiction or historical fiction, on Oliver Cromwell?

I read the biography by Antonia Fraser and it was very good.

As a starter Frazer is a good one

Christopher Hill – 'God's Englishman' is a classic

I have Antonia Fraser book and sadly I think its very poor – Hill is a better bet in my view.

God's Executioner by Ó Siochrú is a good one for Cromwell's Irish campaign.

Yeah that is a great read.

If you read O Siochru you have to read Tom Reilly's 'Cromwell: An Honourable Enemy' for a debunking of much of the political myth making of the 19th century onward demonization of Cromwell in Ireland.

I think the comments re Cromwell Our Chief of men are a little harsh. I found the content very general, but also very readable (which compared with some tomes is a blessed relief). It also introduces a number of relevant personalities.

Supercilius Maximus01 May 2015 6:49 a.m. PST

I would second Gwydion's comments – IIRC, Reilly's book was so ground-breaking and challenged so many deep-rooted beliefs in Irish history, that it was discussed in the Dail.
