I am having a terrible time trying to understand how much of a difference there is between the two scale sizes of 1:8500 and 1/4105. I want to play Battlestar Galactica and the colonial battlestars come in 1/4105 scale but no cylon base star is offered. I have found a Revell 30th anniversary model of a cylon base star but it is 1/8500. How much of a difference in scale are these to sizes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The Base Star in 1:8500 is less than half the size it would be in 1/4105. |

There are some other BSG options, but I'm not sure what scale they're officially at. Studio Bergstrom and Ravenstar both have battlestars and basestars (Ravenstar has a lot more too). They're more suitable for fleetscale gaming though, using small fighters, rather than "fighter scale" gaming. Whatever source of ships you go with though, you'd want the basestars bigger. |

I saw a battle set up at Salute that looked terrific using the larger scale ships. I really appreciate the help. thanks! |

Mathematically, a bit less than half the size for the Base Stars, when compared to the Battlestars, which are twice as big in 1/4105th scale. The differences will be very noticeable (if you are aware of the true dimensions of the vessels), since when observed in two dimension from above, length and width, those tend to multiply, so the Base Star will really only appear to be about 1/4 the size that it should be (1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4 the apparent true size). Of course, in space, everything is relative, so unless you can find a larger one for a reasonable price, I wouldn't sweat it, since perhaps the Base Star is just further away, so looks smaller due to distance away from the observer. I see a lot of people using the large, Monogram Base Stars (plastic), with the plastic, and/or resin Battlestar models. |

The options are pretty limited. thanks for the replies. I think I'll go with the Revell base stars and the Moebius Battlestars. |

Starfighter Shipyards has several Colonial Battlestars available in the 1/4105 scale. I consittered getting a Cylon Basestar commissioned and am still consittering it however the 1/4105 scale sales have slowed consiteribly. Maybe a Basestar in the 1/4105 scale will generate intrest again. Heres some pics of what I have available.
Cygnus Heavy escort 6 inches in length
Valkyrie 7 inches in length
Poseidon (Valkyrie 2) 13 inches in length
Mercury 22 inches in length Then tons of fighters roughly 10 mm
Three diferent Cylon Raiders
TOS and Mark II vipers Mark VII now available
Coming soon the Colonal Steathstar Next Project is the Blackbird Stealth fighter. Also wotrking on 1/270 scale BSG fighters for X-wing |

Some of the confusion may be in the use of the colon vs slash in 1:8500 and 1/4105. I guess if you were to "speak them out" it would be "8500 models laid end to end would be as long as the real thing" and "the model is one 4105th the size of the real thing". They both mean the same thing: The model is one 8500th the size of the real thing, or one 4105th the size of the real thing. So as everyone has been saying, 1:8500 or 1/8500 is a tad less than half the size of 1:4105 or 1/4105. |

Another option would be to go with the smaller scale, resin Battlestars (about 7" long for one of them), and then the plastic Cylon, old-style Basestar. Not sure if there is more than one Battlestar variant in the 7" scale, and seem to recall it being from the newer TV series, on SyFy. Perhaps they make several Battlestar variants in that scale as well. I must admit though, I really like the big, 1/4105th scale models, based upon pics I've seen of them. Haven't seen any in person, yet, but am sure they would be even more impressive, especially with squadrons of "fleet scale" fighters swarming around them. |

I beleive the guys from Mechworld bought a few of my Battlestars in the past. The group that bought them was sending me info on them for a full thrust game they were doing. |
