I have easy access to Osprey books in the areas of AWI, ACW, and Napoleonics and have depended on them for my basic battle knowledge. I was wondering if there are any similar publishers and how they compare. I may expand in SYW, TYW and ECW. Thank you for you opinions. |

If you read European languages there are numerous alternatives. Particularly recommend Batailles Oubliees and Guerros y Batallos. Oh and Perfect Paperbacks in Italy have some interesting titles. |

I have The Achaemenid Persian Army by Duncan Head from Montvert Publications. I Googled them, and it seems Montvert put out several other books, on Bactrian armies, Sleucid & Ptolemaic Reformed Armies, and Warriors of Eurasia. The Persian book I have is pretty much in the Osprey format, 72 pages long with 8 color plates. Europa Militaria also brought out a line of books link I have The Vikings by Nurmann, Shulze & Verhulsdonk. It is 96 pages long, with no color plates, but lots of color photos of re-enactors and artifacts. I think I saw one of the books Green Tiger was talking about, dealing with the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. I remember it being about Osprey size with color plates of the various armies. Grelber |
