Inner Sphere, Clan, Periphery, mercenary, or whoever- in whose name does your 'mech pencil in armor bubbles? When I picked up the old boxed set, my friend immediately called the Draconis Combine. I went with Marik, I'm not really sure why. Maybe I wanted an excuse to paint stuff purple. I later really liked their proprietary gear. When the universe ultimately expanded beyond the factions on page margins, I just stuck with them. And besides, the clans never really struck my fancy. |

House Steiner, of the Lyran COMMONWEALTH. It hurt when they became the baddies as the Lyran Alliance. Damon. |

House Marik/Free Worlds League! I started Btech in the 90's and the House Marik Field Manual really spoke to me, for reasons I still don't understand but now Marik is my house. -Will |

We just choose mechs and did not bother with a faction. |

I've always had a soft spot for the Draconis Combine/ Kurita for the IS and the Wolves and Ghost Bears for the Clans. |

I went with a merc unit the entire time we played. Others chose Steiner, Kurita, etc., but I always stuck with my mercs. |

I liked House Steiner. I was never a fan of the Clans, I felt that they changed the feel of the game too much. Ron |

Being a fan of big but clumsy empires (like Austria-Hungary), back in the '80s I was a fan of the Lyran Commonwealth. But I also liked the Eridani Light Horse (a mercenary unit). Later? Eh. Northwind Highlanders, maybe? Rob |

21st Centauri Lancers (a mercenary unit). If you need an unit people have actually heard of, Black Widow Company, pre-Clan. Edit: There is a Battletech wiki, and here's a link to the entry for the 21st Centauri Lancers. Apparently things got "interesting" for them beyond the time period available when I was playing the game. link |

Steiner for me as well, but like others I lost interest when the clans appeared. |

Even though I never really played, I've got a massive collection of the novels and sourcebooks. Wolf's Dragoons were and remain one of my favorite factions. It's a shame they barely exist in 3145, but who knows how they might be reborn in another 30 "years"? Besides, being willing to have sweeping changes and even eliminating whole factions in the setting (while still encouraging folks to play in the era they like best) is one of the better traits of the BT writers. Like many folks, I do have a particular fondness for the pre-3050 era, but lots of great stuff has happened since then and it'd be a pretty boring universe (and probably a dead game) if the Clans had never come along. Folks are welcome to have their preferences, but for a bit of perspective BT started in '85, the clans showed up 4 years later in '89. That's 26 years that some folks have spent bemoaning their introduction. ; – ) |
