A mate and I are big fans of 3rd and 4th editions. We've been talking a lot lately about going the 15mm route for Oldhammer. I really want to do Araby and Estalian forces, along with a Dogs of War Mercenary force. Has anyone ever gamed Oldhammer (or newhammer for that matter) in 15mm scale? If so, do you use figures based singly, or in multiples? What changes have you made to the measurements? How do you find it plays? |

Just to add to the above (I'm the mate in question!), my current plan is to base figures in groups of 2-4 with singles for casualty removal. I'd use 10, 15 and 20mm frontages and just measure in centimetres instead of inches. Perhaps allowing for extra march/double moves early in the game if needed. |

I have done Warhammer Ancients in 15mm and it worked out fine. The figures were on individual washers on magnetic stands. (2 layers of magnetic business cards) so they could be removed one at a time. Didn't adjust distance since Warhammer always played too slow for me. |

Admittedly, I'll be using Kings of War, but I found multiple basing with dice frames from minibits to keep track of casualties to be a good solution. Depending on the size of your units, individual basing can be a lot of hassle without a sabot base of some sort. I've based my units in groups of 10 (well, 8 really, due to the addition of the dice frames). If skirmishing movement is important, I would base them individually, but I don't really use skirmishers much. |

I did Warhammer Ancients in 15mm plenty of times. The way to do it is to not change a thing including base size. Just put four figures on one 20mm or 25mm square base and call that a "figure" for rules purposes. For cav put 4 figures on a 25x50mm base and that is one "figure." Everything will work out exactly the same and you will have a very impressive looking army. With some of the bigger 15mm figs you will probably only be able to do 3 figures on a base, so try it first. 3 figs will look almost as impressive. |

I planned on 3-4 figures on a normal 20mm base and leaving all the measurements the same. |

I've done this in 6mm, Heroic and Ros and Microworld Games, 10 models per 20mm base and just play the same rules. I've also gone semi-element based. Put 4 28 models (though you could do this with any scale) on a 40mm square base and convert to cm, this makes the 40mm square base 4 inches, the equivalent of 5 20mm bases. Hence the 40mm square base now represents a block of 25 models (16 for 25mm bases). Use dice to record casualties and it allows huge games with a lot of maneuvering. |

I game Kings of War in 15mm and have no problem. For Warhammer I would use multiple bases and just keep a casualty record for each unit as you would do with Principles of War rules. Enjoy, 15mm is great for mass fanatsy battle! |

Changing the play scale of Warhammer (or Kings of War, for that matter) is a matter of four things that need to be changed in pairs. IF you change base size, you also need to change the size of weapon and spell templates. IF you change movement rates, then the ~6 turn structure of the Warhammers will call for altering the table size. As noted by others already, none of these needs to change. You can alter just the miniature size and change nothing else. |

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! |

Wait, no one has mentioned playing Warmaster in 15mm instead of playing Warhammer? And the added bonus of being able to use the same stands in many other games, including historicals? Well, let me be the first to invite you into the light and mention Warmaster as an alternative. We have an official Araby army list BTW. :-) Then again, you could play both! Something to think about. |

I'm a big fan of Warmaster. It is a different (and better imho) game, but I do love 3rd edition, and want to specifically be playing that. Thanks though |

I've only completed 1 unit, but I decided to use 40mm frontage, as it's pretty common across several rules sets, this is the start of my Empire army. link
