While looking on the internet for information about battlefield formations employed by cossacks, I came across an article which states that in the War of Liberation (1813-14) "Prussian Landwehr cavalry used a single-rank formation." I have never come across this before and I was wondering if it is correct? (Unfortunately, the article seems to have been copied from somewhere else and no source is provided)

Interesting ;-)

The Prussian Landwehr used the same drill regulations as the regular troops.

For the cavalry, two ranks was the standard. Forming them up in one rank only may have been used at a time as a ruse, in order to give the impression of a greater force. But it wouldn't have been applied in close combat.

At least I firmly believe so, I have never come across any reference to a one-rank-formation of Prussian Landwehr cavalry.

Thanks Oliver. It sounded a bit unlikely to me too. Still, it's one of those things that makes you wonder where the author got the idea (and who the author is for that matter).

The Landwehr fought in two ranks. Often would form column.
