I am a long time gamer with limited WFB experience (other than collecting).

With all the apparent changes it seems that a lot of people are "going back to third" (if they ever left.

I had a question, do the more modern army lists work with third edition or do they screw it up? Are people using the newer army books with third or only the "Ravening Hordes" era lists?

Thank you.

I don't think this is possible.

We currently use 5th edition, but the recent armylists are too different compared to those of 5th.
The magic system is completely different, as is the points system.

Original Ravening Hordes was for 2nd edition. Later on the name was also used for the army list booklet for 6th edition.

For the third edition, there was an army list supplement called "Warhammer Armies" that contained army lists for the major factions in the setting.

As for using more modern army lists with 3rd edition, I don't think that they would work very well directly – though the basics have stayed similar, there has been quite some changes in details.

On the other hand, 3rd edition rulebook comes up with point costs for pretty much everything in the rulebook, so you can calculate point costs for army lists you might construct yourself. New army books might work as a source of inspiration for constructing army lists of your own.

I'm pretty sure you can get Warhammer Armies for 3ed on ebay or for sure through some torrent …

It was a great book! I have my copy still

I think most of your models would port quite nicely into 3rd. The interesting thing about 3rd edition is that the rulebook was pre-existing to the army book and gives rules for costing out most troop types you care to put together (various types of elites affecting the basic race profile, plus equipment, plus special rules such as bombardier, or scout, or…..).

The army book gives some rationale and 'off the shelf' troop types and is where the official army slide began. It is a very cool book and shouldn't be too hard to find an electronic copy.

Armies are much smaller for a given point value (i.e. troops are much more expensive), but that means there is more granularity.
